Game 2 Highlights
NEWARK, N.J. (March 28, 2018) – Rutgers University-Newark softball's rookie pitcher
Paige Masiello threw her first career no-hitter to highlight a doubleheader sweep of visiting St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn today on Alumni Field.
The Scarlet Raiders extend a stellar start to 2018 and improve their record to 14-3 as their current winning-streak now stands at four games. The Bears move to 6-10.
Rutgers-Newark 1, St. Joe's-Brooklyn 0
Senior captain
Morgan Walizer singled home the only run of the game, providing the only support Masiello (8-2) would need as she had the finest start of her young career. Masiello blanked the Bears while hurling a no-hitter in a masterful performance. She faced just one batter over the minimum, conceding a free pass in the top of the first, and struck out six hitters.
The Raiders got the only offense they needed in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman
Jaclyn Arute doubled to right-center and senior
Kelly Yusko worked a walk to set up Walizer with two on and two outs. The captain delivered, sending the ball into left field and driving in Arute to take a 1-0 lead.
Masiello would take it from there sitting down 16 consecutive opponents after her first inning walk to clinch the victory and no-hitter.
This is R-N's second no-hitter in 2018 as Masiello and Walizer combined to no-hit Keene State in an 8-0 win during the team's Florida Spring Break Trip on March 12. Walizer hurled the last solo no-hitter in program history against Yeshiva on April 13, 2016.
Arute led the squad with a 2-for-3 afternoon and one run scored.
Rutgers-Newark 5, St. Joe's-Brooklyn 1
Newark jumped on the visitors early, racking up five runs in the first. Arute got things started with a lead-off walk before sophomore
Sarah Stiehler singled and Yusko drove them both home with a rip into the left-center field gap.
Four batters later, rookie
Sam Morton delivered the second two-run double of the frame to left, doubling the home side's advantage. Sophomore
Brittany Kalesse capped the scoring with an RBI base knock.
That would be all the scoring starter Yusko would need as she produced a commanding outing in the circle allowing just one unearned run in a complete game victory. She conceded three hits and two walks while fanning seven opponents to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Morton led the way offensively going 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI while Stiehler also recorded a 2-for-3 night and scored once.
The Scarlet Raiders begin New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play this weekend, hosting TCNJ for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
