Baseball Downed by No. 17 TCNJ in NJAC Doubleheader

Highlights

NEWARK, N.J (March 31, 2018) –
The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team was defeated in a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games against nationally-ranked No. 17 The College of New Jersey Saturday at Riverfront Stadium in Newark.

Rutgers-Newark falls to 6-12 overall and 0-2 in league play, while TCNJ moves to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raiders will look to get back into the win column Tuesday with a non-conference matchup at DeSales University.

TCNJ 12, Rutgers-Newark 0 (Game 1)
The Lions were able to take the opener, leading wire-to-wire but pulling away from the Scarlet Raiders late.

TCNJ manufactured a run in the first and pushed across two more in the third on three-straight two-out hits, opening a 3-0 lead after three innings of play. The Lions scored another run in the fifth inning and another in the seventh, upping the margin to five (5-0) as Lions' starter Joe Cirillo gained steam as the game went.

Rutgers-Newark starter Mike Zibrin (1-3) pitched well, allowing four runs and 10 hits in 5.1 innings. He was a victim of some tough luck, but performed well keeping his team in the game.

The Lions pulled away late, tacking on three runs in the eighth and four in the ninth for the final margin, finishing the game with 18 hits.

Starting pitcher Joe Cirillo went the distance for the guests, improving to 2-1 with the complete game. He scattered nine hits in all, walking one and striking out seven.

Senior right fielder Adam Tricarico tallied three hits in four trips, pocketing a double and two singles, and senior third baseman Brian Boulineau went 2-for-4 to lead the Rutgers-Newark offense.

TCNJ 7, Rutgers-Newark 3
The guests were able to break a 3-3 tie with four runs in the fourth inning, and a trio of Lion pitchers were able to keep Rutgers-Newark off the board the rest of the way.

Newark picked up eight hits in the nightcap, getting two from junior Luke Magliaro (2-for-5, R). Junior Ryan Zucker went 1-for-3 with a run scored and two walks and five other players had one hit apiece.

Junior starter Anthony Rosoline took the loss (0-3), giving up six earned runs in four innings. He struck out three and walked one. Junior Luis Rojas came on in relief and was superb, throwing five scoreless frames. He scattered three hits and walked five, fanning six Lions to lower his earned-run average to a tiny 1.93 on the season.

The Scarlet Raiders jumped in front with a run in the bottom of the first when Boulineau laced a two-out single to left to bring home Zucker who singled to lead off.

TCNJ pulled in front with three runs in the third, but the Scarlet Raiders came right back to tie, getting one on a wild pitch and another on a sac fly from senior Anthony Perconte.

Unfortunately, the Lions scored four times on four hits and an error in the fourth to take the lead for good. Brandon Zachary picked up the win, striking out nine in six innings of work, with Dylan Crowley and Matt Curry tossing the final three innings.
