No. 7 Rowan Takes NJAC Pair from Scarlet Raider Baseball

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (April 14, 2018) – The Rowan University baseball team swept Rutgers University-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City Saturday.

The Scarlet Raiders fall to 1-9 in the league and 9-19 overall, while Rowan improves to 22-5 overall and 6-4 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Newark will look to get back into the win column Tuesday in Jersey City (Jaroschak Field) against non-conference rival Baruch College.

Rowan 4, Rutgers-Newark 1
The Profs scored one run on two hits and a walk in the first inning, but Scarlet Raider starting pitcher Luis Rojas settled down nicely, retiring the side in order in the second, third and fourth innings.

The guests scored two in the fifth on three hits, extending the lead to three. Rowan starter Andres DiPiazza kept Newark off the board through four and did not allow a hit until sophomore JC Ball singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Ball advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a passed ball, eventually scoring on a ground ball off the bat of junior Ryan Zucker to get the Scarlet Raiders on the scoreboard. Rojas tossed a perfect sixth, but allowed a run in the seventh and was replaced by junior Casey Hanley after a very solid start.

Rojas allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits, four walks and six strikeouts over 6.1 innings. The junior falls to 1-3 with the loss.

Junior Casey Hanley tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Raiders, allowing two hits and striking out one.

Rutgers-Newark brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, and senior catcher Justin Marks put a great swing on an offering from Rowan reliever Dan Corvo, but he hit a laser right at center fielder Danny Shane for the final out.

Zucker had a hit, a walk and the Rutgers-Newark RBI, and senior Anthony Perconte reached base three times via three walks. Ball tallied one hit and one run, and senior Brian Boulineau had a hit and a walk.

DiPiazza earned the win in six innings of work for the Profs, moving to 5-0 on the season. He gave up two hits, struck out eight and walked five. Corvo picked up his second save, getting the final three outs.

Rowan 13, Rutgers-Newark 4
The hosts would take an early lead, but Rowan tallied twice in the second and five times in the third to take control.

Rutgers-Newark tallied nine hits in the nightcap as senior Adam Tricarico and senior Brian Boulineau each went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Luke Magliaro went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Zucker drew three walks and scored two runs.

The Scarlet Raiders pushed across a run in the first inning when Boulineau walloped a single to center, bringing in Zucker who led off the frame with a walk.

The Profs answered with two in their half of the second, getting a triple from shortstop Dillon Mendel to bring in one of the markers, and Rowan hit a pair of two-run homers in a five-run third, pushing its lead to six (7-1).

After a single Rowan tally in the fourth, senior Adam Tricarico and freshman Chris Suleski singled to set the table for the Scarlet Raiders in their half of the frame. Junior Luke Magliaro brought in both with a triple to left-center, getting his team within striking distance at 8-3.

Unfortunately, Rowan tacked on three in the seventh and two more in the ninth, with a Tricarico base hit bringing home a run in the bottom eighth to account for the final Newark run of the afternoon.

Freshman pitcher Eric Morales was solid in his first NJAC action for Rutgers-Newark, allowing just two hits and two unearned runs in 2.2 innings of relief. He struck out two and walked one. Junior Timothy Kales gave R-N 3.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing two earned runs (four total) on eight hits.
