CAMDEN, N.J. (April 14, 2018) – A pair of senior captains led the Rutgers University-Newark softball team to a key New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader sweep at Rutgers University-Camden tonight.
With the pair of 4-1 victories, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 17-10 (3-5 NJAC) while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 9-12 (2-6 NJAC).

The story of the opening contest this evening was senior starter
Kelly Yusko. Yusko got two runs of support over the first four frames and that would be all she needed. She hurled a complete game, five-hit gem, allowing just one run and one walk while striking out six.
Rookie
Jaclyn Arute led off the game with a single and following a Yusko walk and error, the bases were loaded with one out. Senior
Morgan Walizer came through with an RBI groundout to open the scoring.
In the fourth, senior
Kayla Gallo delivered a clutch single to bring home Walizer and double the visitors advantage.
Rookie
Angela Haines led off the top of the sixth with a double and senior
Sam Held had the RBI groundout this time to bring home freshman
Alyssa Mermini who had pinch-run for Haines. Facing another two-out situation with runners on, Yusko helped her own cause on a base knock to center, driving in Arute to make it 4-1.
The Scarlet Raiders offense was led by Yusko who aided her own great pitching effort with a 2-for-3 performance as well as an RBI and a walk. Arute reached base twice with a walk and 1-for-4 game, scoring two runs.

In the nightcap, Walizer put on a similar performance to Yusko, excelling in the circle and at the plate to lead Newark to a crucial doubleheader sweep with a victory in the nightcap.
Walizer had a tremendous start, going the distance while allowing just six hits and one run. She walked none and her lone strikeout was the last out of the night.
The game followed a similar script to the opener as the Raider offense staked Walizer to a two-run lead before tacking on a pair of insurance runs late in the contest.
It was a pitcher's duel for the majority of the nightcap as the teams were scoreless through four innings.
In the top of the fifth, senior
Morgan Schweitzer got things started with a double down the right field line. Two batters later, Haines delivered a crucial two-out RBI double to open the scoring.
One inning later, it was rookie Julia Contravo who came through with a clutch RBI hit, bringing home Yusko with a single to center that doubled the visitors lead.
The Scarlet Raptors got one run back in the bottom of the frame but Rutgers-Newark tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh.
Freshman
Masha Corbett and Haines led off the frame with back-to-back hits. One batter later, Arute brought home Corbett on an RBI groundout before Walizer helped her own cause with an RBI rip into left that made it 4-1.
Offensively, four Raiders recorded multiple hits led by Walizer who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Haines was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Contravo and Schweitzer each went 2-for-4 as Contravo added an RBI and Schweitzer had a run.
Rutgers-Newark continues its NJAC slate on Tuesday against Kean on Alumni Field beginning at 3 p.m.
