FDU-Florham Snaps Men’s Tennis Winning Streak

MAHWAH, N.J. (April 21, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's tennis team saw its four-match winning streak snapped Sunday morning as the Scarlet Raiders fell at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham by a score of 7-2.

Rutgers-Newark falls to 5-7 overall and will visit Brooklyn College Tuesday in its regular-season finale. It will be the team's final tune-up ahead of the Scarlet Raiders' Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament opener at Ramapo College Saturday.

FDU swept the doubles matches to go up 3-0 heading into singles play. Sophomore Alan Yu and newcomer Vihang Patel won six games in a tough 8-6 loss out of the third slot to lead the three R-N pairings.

Brandon Davis won the match of the day for one of the two Scarlet Raider points. The senior pulled out a 7-5 first set, but fell in the second, 6-7. Davis and his opponent Max Moscowitz decided things in a tiebreak, with Davis prevailing, 10-8.

Junior Richard Nguyen was the other triumphant Scarlet Raider, winning 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4. Nguyen was able to show some grit in winning the first set and slammed the door in the second. Veteran Kevin Martin won seven games in a tight loss at No. 5, and Yu picked up six games in a loss at No. 3.

"Today was a very competitive match, and I thought our guys played strongly," said Head Coach Andres Bustani. "Brandon (Davis) earned a tough win against a tough opponent, and Richard (Nguyen) played really well in his win."

Bustani was also happy his team was able to push a talented FDU squad right before it opens postseason play.

"Being able to get a good competitive match today against a strong team was important heading into our GNAC semifinal match at Ramapo next weekend. We still have a lot of work to do, but I am happy with the progress I am seeing."
