POMONA, N.J. (April 30, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team earned a 14-8 New Jersey Athletic Conference win at Stockton University Monday afternoon to close the 2018 season on a four-game winning streak.
The Scarlet Raiders ended the season with a win over Stockton on Senior Day in Newark (Thursday), a sweep of Montclair State Saturday and a triumph at Stockton Monday. R-N completes the year with a record of 13-23 overall and 5-13 in the conference. Stockton drops to 6-24 overall and 3-15 in league play.
Holding a 2-1 lead after four, Rutgers-Newark broke the game open with seven runs in the fifth. Senior
Danny Iannaccone walked to lead things off, and after stealing second, he came in to score on a hit off the bat of sophomore
Christian Diaz. Sophomore
John Klimowich walked and stole second, and senior
Justin Marks came up next, delivering a run-scoring single. Senior
Brian Boulineau followed, roping a two-run double, with
Dominic Magliaro blasting a three-run homer to put an exclamation mark on the frame. The homer was first of the year for Magliaro who ends 2018 with 30 hits and 20 RBI.
Newark tacked on five markers in the seventh to all-but lock up the win. Freshman
Chris Suleski started the stanza with a hit, and
Christian Shelley pocketed a base knock next.
Dominic Magliaro cracked an RBI single for the first tally,
Luke Magliaro singled to load the bases, and Iannaccone cleared the sacks with a double to right-center. Klimowich put a bow on the inning, driving in the final run with a double to left field.
The Ospreys would make things interesting late with five runs in the ninth, but it was not nearly enough as the Scarlet Raiders closed it out for the victory.
Rutgers-Newark racked up 14 hits and 14 runs.
Dominic Magliaro went 2-for-4 (HR) with two runs scored and four RBI,
Luke Magliaro was 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, and Iannaccone went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI. Boulineau finished 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI, with Diaz ripping a pair of hits, scoring once and driving in another.
Junior
Casey Hanley earned the win on the mound for Rutgers-Newark, going six solid innings. He scattered eight hits and was charged with three earned runs. He walked three and struck out four, ending the year with three very nice starts heading into his senior season.
Sophomore
Jason Palmeri tossed two scoreless innings of relief for the Scarlet Raiders.
