NEWARK, N.J. (April 9, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team topped Drew University by a score of 9-6 Monday at Riverfront Stadium.
Rutgers-Newark improves to 8-15 overall, while Drew drops to 13-7. The Scarlet Raiders will host Alvernia University Tuesday in a non-conference contest at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. and fans unable to make it can follow via live stats.
The Scarlet Raiders received multiple hits from six different players, scoring five runs in a big third inning, and they got excellent starting pitching from
Casey Hanley.
After Drew took a 1-0 lead in its half of the second, Rutgers-Newark responded with two runs on five hits in its half of the frame. Senior
Justin Marks – who singled with two outs – came around to score on a two-out double off the bat of junior
Dominic Magliaro, and sophomore
Kevin Tamsula brought around Magliaro with the lead run.
Newark added to its lead in the third, scoring five times to open a 7-1 advantage. An opposite field single from
Luke Magliaro and two throwing errors led to the first two markers of the inning, and a
Dominic Magliaro triple plated two more tallies. The final run crossed on a sac fly from Tamsula.
Hanley made his first career start for Rutgers-Newark, tossing five solid innings. He struck out four and scattered seven hits, giving up a pair of earned runs for his second win of the season. Getting five innings out of the flame-throwing reliever was big for R-N as the Raiders have six games this week.
The Rangers sliced two scores off the Newark lead in the sixth, but hits from senior
Adam Tricarico and
Luke Magliaro put runners at the corners with nobody out, and senior
Justin Marks drove in Tricarico with a rip to center field for the Raiders. Then, the lead moved back to five (9-4) on a run-scoring single from Tamsula later in the inning.
The guests would not go away, scoring twice in the seventh to make it a three-run game, but reliever
Timothy Kales sent the Rangers down in order in the eighth and veteran
Luis Rojas came on to get the final out for his first save of the season.
Tricarico reached base five times, going 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and he was hit by a pitch.
Dominic Magliaro went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, and Tamsula went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Luke Magliaro went 2-for-4 with two runs, Marks went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and sophomore
John Klimowich picked up two knocks as well. In all, the Scarlet Raiders pounded out 14 hits and worked a trio of walks in addition getting hit by three pitches. Three rips went for extra bases and four different players had a stolen base.
Shortstop Zachary Lipschitz led the Rangers, going 5-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI. Drew had 12 hits in all, getting a pair of Max Felsenstein as well.
