NEWARK, N.J. (May 9, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark softball team saw its excellent 2018 season come to an end Wednesday on Alumni Field, falling to New York University by a score of 6-2 in the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship.
The Scarlet Raiders end their season with a record of 21-17 – which matches the program-record for wins first achieved in 2016. NYU advances to the semifinals of the tournament and improves to 21-20 with the win.
The contest marked the first home ECAC game for Rutgers-Newark in program history, and it also marked the final game for seniors
Sam Held,
Kayla Gallo,
Morgan Schweitzer,
Kelly Yusko and
Morgan Walizer.
NYU was able to open an early 3-0 lead, scoring once in the first and two more times in the second thanks to a two-run homer down the left-field line off the bat of shortstop Morgan Clemens.
The guests tacked on two markers in the third to open a 5-0 advantage, and NYU starter Karissa Zubulake worked around an error in the bottom of the frame to keep the Scarlet Raiders off the board.
Schweitzer and Walizer each pocketed base knocks with two outs in the fourth, but Newark could not score, and NYU pushed across another run in the fifth to open a 6-0 lead.
The Scarlet Raiders never quit, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore
Brielle Mattiello and freshman
Jaclyn Arute each singled to set the table and the duo came around to score on an NYU throwing error later in the frame. Schweitzer added a single to get two on with two out, but Zubulake was able to work through to lock up the complete-game win, improving to 7-3 on the season.
Yusko suffered the loss for Rutgers-Newark, dropping to 7-7 on the year. She went two-plus, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks. Walizer fired 3.0 innings of relief, giving up just one run on four hits, and freshman
Paige Masiello hurled two scoreless frames behind Walizer.
The Scarlet Raiders ended the night with 10 hits. Arute, Schweitzer and Walizer each went 2-for-4, while Yusko, freshman
Julie Contravo, junior
Samantha Hoffman and Mattiello each had one. Mattiello and Arute scored the Scarlet Raider runs, with Hoffman and Contravo each drawing a walk.
