Women's Soccer Doubled Up by No. 4 TCNJ in NJAC Opener

NEWARK, N.J. (September 15, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team saw its three-match winning streak come to an end tonight against fourth-ranked TCNJ in a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup on Frederick Douglass Field, 4-2.

The Scarlet Raiders move to 3-2-1 (0-1 NJAC) while the Lions improve to 3-1 (1-0 NJAC).

Rutgers-Newark was led by senior Julianna Ceballos who notched a goal and assist while sophomore Iasia Goeloe added a marker, her second of the season.

Junior keeper Heidi Paulson had a fantastic second half, despite the scoreline, racking up multiple fantastic saves while accumulating a total of eight. Sophomore Jasmin Erichsen also did her best against a potent attack, making five stops in the first period.

Nicole DiPasquale earned the win in net for the visitors while Alexandra Panasuk came on in relief to close out the final 19 minutes.

The Raiders have a quick turnaround as they host non-conference opponent Brooklyn College on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

TCNJ came out strong early in the first half. A little less than 19 minutes into the match, the visitors opened the scoring when Julia Obst sent a cross into the box. Her ball found the head of Randi Smith who nodded it onto the feet of Julianna Bertolino. Bertolino finished off the attack, burying her shot in the lower-left corner to give her side the lead.

The Lions would double their advantage in the 37th. Nikki Butler corralled the ball at the top of the 18 and turned to face goal. After taking a few touches to create some space, Butler beautifully placed her strike in the upper-right 90 of the net to make it 2-0.

Still, R-N was able to pull one back just before the end of the first period. Against the run of play, Ceballos sent a ball behind the defense for Goeloe. Goeloe latched onto the boss and masterfully held off a defender before beating the on-rushing keeper and scoring as she fell to the turf, halving the hosts' deficit with 36 seconds remaining in the half.

TCNJ picked up where it left off earlier in the night and continued to control the pace of the game in the second stanza. The visitors had a golden opportunity to extend their lead in the 53rd but Paulson capped a particularly impressive stretch of saves with a spectacular diving stop on a penalty kick.

In the 60th minute, Obst nearly added a goal to her name but her header clanged off the crossbar.

The Lions kept pressing and finally got its third score about nine minutes after hitting the crossbar. Lauren McLaughlin sent a corner into the box and in the ensuing scrum, Butler got the ball and poked it just under the arms of Paulson for her second goal of the night.

The visitors tacked on one more insurance tally in the 82nd when Smith struck a half-volley that snuck past Paulson at the near post off a service from Amelia Curtis.

The Raiders continued to fight, however, and got their second score a little over two minutes later. Goeloe won a penalty kick fighting for a ball in the box and it was Ceballos who calmly stepped to the spot, got the keeper moving the wrong way, and coolly slotted her shot into the right side of the net.

Unfortunately, that would not be enough as TCNJ remained in complete command, producing chance after chance that were nevertheless denied by the Raiders defense and Paulson who had a fantastic match.
