NEWARK, N.J. (September 17, 2018) – Freshman forward
Maria Miranda tallied a hat trick and sophomore midfielder
Ana Silveira scored twice to lead the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team to a 7-1 win over Brooklyn College Thursday night on Frederick Douglass Field.
The Scarlet Raiders improve to 4-2-1 with the win and they will return to action at non-conference foe Salisbury University (Md.) Wednesday. Brooklyn drops to 1-2 with the loss.
It was all Scarlet Raiders from the opening touch, controlling field position and possession throughout the game's first 45 minutes. Miranda was responsible for all three Rutgers-Newark goals in the first half, getting an assist from sophomore
Iasia Goeloe for her second of the season at 14:41. On the play, junior
Shayna Bohus delivered a cross in front. The Brooklyn defense broke up the first attempt, but Goeloe tapped to Miranda off the far post for a 1-0 lead.
Rutgers-Newark opened a 2-0 lead in the 24th when Miranda headed home a corner off the foot of senior
Juliana Ceballos. Ceballos picked up her third assist of the year on the play, and Miranda scored an unassisted tally with 3:35 left in the first to give her a hat trick. After a breakaway was stopped by Brooklyn goalkeeper Amanpreet Kaur, Miranda was able to turnover the Bulldog defense and loft a shot up and in for her third of the match.
Silveira scored back-to-back goals less than five minutes apart in the second to put Rutgers-Newark up 5-0. The first was after a cross from freshman
Iria Diaz who found Silveira wide open in front, and the second was all Silveira as she carried into the left side of the box from 40-yards out and eventually blasted a shot into the upper-right. The scores were her fourth and fifth of the season.
Junior
Samantha Richter put the Scarlet Raiders on top 6-0 in the 71st minute thanks to an assist from classmate
Seray Kurtis. Kurtis controlled a loose ball following a cross, and tapped to Richter who was just off the right post for her second goal of the season.
Brooklyn got on the board in the 79th minute when Keri Kenna chased down a through-ball from Rachel Gomez, and Rutgers-Newark capped the scoring when Diaz found senior
Juliana Ceballos for her sixth goal of the season. The assist was the second of the night for Diaz as the Scarlet Raiders have now scored six, seven and eight goals in three of their five home matches this season.
R-N finished with a 10-0 advantage in corners, a 42-5 margin in shots and a 23-5 advantage in shots on target.
Freshman goalkeeper
Nina Gonzalez notched the win in goal for Rutgers-Newark, making four saves, while her Kaur was credited with 16 stops for Brooklyn. The win was the first in Gonzalez's collegiate career.
After the Salisbury match Wednesday, Rutgers-Newark will visit Stockton University Saturday looking for its first New Jersey Athletic Conference win of the year. Fans should visit
