Salisbury Downs Women’s Soccer in Non-League Action

Ceballos Runs Point Streak to Six

SALISBURY, Md. (September 19, 2018) – Salisbury University defeated Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 4-1 in non-conference women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon in Maryland.

The Sea Gulls scored a pair of tallies in the first half and two in the second with the Scarlet Raiders getting on the board at 87:15 when senior Juliana Ceballos tallied unassisted.

Rutgers-Newark drops to 4-3-1 overall, while the Sea Gulls improve to 3-4-1. The Scarlet Raiders will look to get back in the win column Saturday when they visit New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival Stockton University. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.

Junior goalkeeper Heidi Paulson made seven saves for the guests in the loss as Salisbury ended the match with a 23-11 margin in shots and an 11-2 edge in shots on target. Rutgers-Newark completed the 90 minutes with four corners compared to two for the Sea Gulls.

The two sides split shots early on, but the hosts were able to get on the board in the 22nd minute when Lydia Narum scored thanks to a feed from Ally Goetz.

Newark was able to stay within one for much of the remainder of the first half, but Salisbury added to its lead with 3:01 remaining in the stanza when Julie Venere tallied and Dakota Campbell assisted.

Just 1:01 into the second, the Gulls went on top 3-0 as Goetz recorded her second and third points of the afternoon. Alyssa Chesney notched the final home marker of the match in the 57th minute.

Despite the deficit, R-N battled through the final whistle. Newark generated back-to-corners in the 70th minute that led to one shot from Ceballos, and after a couple Salisbury attempts, Ceballos was able to score her seventh goal of the season to get her side on the board.

Ceballos now has six-game point streak, twice scoring multiple goals and three times having at least one goal and one assist in the same game. The veteran Scarlet Raider now has 18 points in seven matches played, putting nearly half of her attempts on target.

Following its NJAC match at Stockton on Saturday, Rutgers-Newark will return to the Brick City for a league showdown against conference for Ramapo College on Wednesday, September 26.
