Cortland Edges Women’s Soccer in Overtime, 3-2

CORTLAND, N.Y. (September 2, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team suffered a tough 3-2 overtime loss at SUNY Cortland Sunday at Red Dragon Field.

Cortland improves to 2-0-0 with the win, while Rutgers-Newark drops to 0-1-1 in defeat. The Scarlet Raiders will return to action Wednesday night when they host Old Westbury on the newly minted Frederick Douglass Field. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. immediately following the men's soccer match against CCNY and fans in attendance will get free t-shirts as part of the annual Soccer Fest celebration.

The hosts were able to overcome a 2-0 deficit after the first stanza, tying the contest 2-2 in the 71st minute, and notching the game-winner 1:27 into overtime.

The Red Dragons ended with a 21-9 edge in shots, a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-3 margin in corner kicks.

Rutgers-Newark took the lead at 8:50 when sophomore midfielder Ana Silveira rang the bell for the first time this season. After a 0-0 draw against Lehman in the opener, Silveira tallied the squad's first marker of the season, drilling a perfect shot into the upper-left corner from 30 yards out.

Junior Shayna Bohus put Rutgers-Newark up 2-0 with a score at 43:01. Like Silveira's goal, Bohus was able to score from distance, putting her shot into the left side of the net thanks to a helper from junior Samantha Richter. The bid snuck underneath the crossbar, and gave Rutgers-Newark the momentum heading into intermission.

Cortland found its way on the board 1:11 into the second half, and the Red Dragons pulled even with 19:30 left in regulation.

Sophomore Jasmin Erichsen made seven saves for Rutgers-Newark, suffering the tough loss. Abby Miller earned the win in goal for Cortland but was not credited with a save.
