NEWARK, N.J. (September 21, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team will host Stockton University Saturday night in Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) showdown on Frederick Douglass Field.
Rutgers-Newark is coming off a 5-0 home victory over non-league foe Albright College on Wednesday night, and the Scarlet Raiders will be playing just their third home match of the season. To date, Newark is 4-3-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference, suffering a tough overtime loss at The College of New Jersey last Saturday.
The Ospreys will bring a record of 4-3-1 into Saturday's matchup and most recently played Moravian College to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night. Stockton is 1-0-0 in the NJAC after a 1-0 win at Kean University last Saturday.
As a team, the Scarlet Raiders rank second in the NJAC in assists per game, points per game, scoring offense, total assists, total points and total goals. The Raiders are third in shutout percentage and fourth in corners.
From a national statistical ranking standpoint, Newark slots in at No. 7 in assists, goals and points, sitting No. 12 in scoring offense, No. 14 in assists per game and No. 15 in points per game.
Freshman forward
Franco Catania is No. 11 in the nation with eight goals and his 18 points have him at No. 15. Freshman goalkeeper
Christian Andrach and his four individual clean sheets are good for 14th nationally, while sophomore
Ariel Parada's two game-winning goals are good for No. 35. Sophomore
Joshua Breton-Jones' four assists have him at No. 35 nationally and second in the league.
Villy Fortulus leads the Stockton offense with six goals and 12 points, while Eucario Solano and Ervin Gjeli both have a pair of assists. Dino Gromitsaris has 23 saves in nearly 700 minutes in goal, turning in a 1.95 goals-against average and a .605 save percentage.
Rutgers-Newark earned a 4-1 win at Stockton in 2017, getting two goals from former forward
Chigozie Atubi. The last time the two teams met in Newark (2016), the Raiders topped the Ospreys 2-0.
