NEWARK, N.J. (September 26, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team edged visiting Ramapo College in a tight New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup tonight on Frederick Douglass Field, 2-1. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 5-4-1 (1-2-0 NJAC) while the Roadrunners fall to 2-7-0 (1-2-0 NJAC).
Rutgers-Newark got its winner at 88:05 off the left foot of junior
Shayna Bohus. Sophomore
Samantha Richter set up the score as she worked her way down to the touchline on the right wing before cutting the ball back to the top of the six-yard box. From there, Bohus controlled the pass, spun, and deposited her shot just inside the far post in the side netting for her third of the season.
Bohus and sophomore
Ana Silveira led the team with a goal apiece while Richter and senior
Juliana Ceballos each recorded an assist.
The Raiders outshot the visitors 24-7, including 12-6 in attempts on frame, and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
R-N junior keeper
Heidi Paulson earned the win with five saves while Elizabeth Harvell had a busy night with 10 stops despite taking the loss.
"This was a hard fought battle tonight. I'm proud of our team for coming out on top and fighting through until the end." said Head Coach
Ariana Ruela, "We stayed composed and finished our chances. Now it's time to tighten up defensively before our next tough opponent."
The Scarlet Raiders continue their NJAC slate on Saturday when they head to Montclair State for an 11 a.m. match.
Both sides had early chances within the first two minutes. Ramapo had a one-time shot off a cross go wide while rookie
Jessica Moreno fought off a defender before ripping an attempt from outside the 18 that was collected by the keeper.
Following that exchange, Rutgers-Newark largely dominated proceedings with the lion's share of possession and scoring chances.
The Raiders' next opportunity came in the 5
th minute when Richter got past a couple defenders and tried to poke the ball around the on-rushing goalie, but her bid went just wide.
Silveira just missed a chance when Ceballos played her a square ball in the 7
th minute as her one-timed swerving strike went high.
Still, the Raiders and Silveira broke through soon after in the 17
th when Ceballos cut in from the right wing and beat a couple defenders as she weaved her way into the box. From there, Ceballos laid off a perfect square pass to Silveira who made no mistake this time around, hitting a one-time bullet that screamed past the goalie for a 1-0 lead and her seventh goal of the season.
R-N nearly doubled its lead two minutes later when Ceballos slid another great pass through to Bohus on the left side of the box but her right-footed effort was stopped by the netminder.
With under 10 minutes remaining in the half, the Roadrunners got an equalizer against the run of play. After a sliced clearance effort went out for a corner, the visitors capitalized. Lillian Vizcaino served a dangerous ball into the box and it was eventually poked home after a scrum by Kaitlyn Kelly to knot the score at 1-1.
The Scarlet Raiders tried to respond a few minutes later when Ceballos won a ball in her attacking third and danced around a few defenders on the edge of the 18. However, her left-footed strike wound up in the arms of the goalie.
The home side's last chance of the opening period came on a free kick when Ceballos' out-swinger from the right wing found the head of freshman
Bre Costa but the attempt was saved, sending the teams' into the break deadlocked at 1-1 despite a 12-4 edge in shots including, 8-4 in attempts on frame, for Newark.
Early in the second half, rookie
Iasia Goeloe nearly put the Raiders back in front. Attacking from the right edge of the box, Goeloe beat two defenders with quick footwork and found herself one-on-one with the goalie. Unfortunately, the Ramapo keeper came up big, parrying away Goeloe's right-footed blast to keep the teams tied.
Ceballos had spectators fooled in the 67
th when she curled a one-time right-footed effort from inside the box that appeared to beat the keeper on the near post but actually went just wide of the net. A few minutes later, Ceballos had another chance when
Melanie Egas sent a cross from the right wing that found her a couple steps outside the six-yard box. However, Ceballos had a tough time with the bouncing ball and saw her effort go high and wide as the keeper and a defender closed her down.
R-N's best chance before Bohus' eventual breakthrough came off the left foot of junior
Deirdre Mackin who had her strike glance off the crossbar in the 80
th.
