MONTCLAIR, N.J. (September 29, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team suffered a tough loss at Montclair State University this afternoon in New Jersey Athletic Conference play, 1-0. A late first half goal was all the hosts needed to clip the Scarlet Raiders who move to 5-6-1 (1-3-0 NJAC) while the Red Hawks improve to 6-1-3 (2-1-1 NJAC).
Rutgers-Newark was led offensively by senior Julianna Ceballos who launched six shots including two on frame while sophomore
Ana Silveira had three attempts and one that forced a save.
Junior keeper
Heidi Paulson made six saves but took the loss while Lindsay Freewalt earned the win and shutout with three stops.
Montclair State edged the visitors in shot attempts 15-12 (7-3 in strikes on target) and in corner kicks 3-1.
The Red Hawks breakthrough came with just under 90 seconds remaining in the first half. A corner by Lindsday Bathmann found the head of Kaitlyn Scrivanich who powered the ball past the goalie for the only score of the match.
Junior
Deirdre Mackin had the Raiders' first chance of the contest in the 5
th minute but sent her bid wide. Silveira and Ceballos would also be off the mark on one attempt each before Silveira forced Freewalt's first save in the 39
th.
In the second half, Paulson kept Newark close with big stops in the 51
st and 74
th minutes while Ceballos challenged the opposing goalie with a strike in the 64
th.
The Scarlet Raiders' best opportunity to find an equalizer all came in a flurry of chances between 74:49 and 76:20. Ceballos led the charge with an attempt that was blocked before sophomore
Samantha Richter followed with a blast that was deflected out for a corner.
On the ensuing cross, the ball fell to junior
Shayna Bohus but the winger saw her effort flash wide of the net.
Still, just over 30 seconds later, R-N had another crack at it when Ceballos created a scoring chance but had her strike saved in the 77
th minute. Unfortunately, that would be the last strong opportunity for the visitors as Montclair State saw out a tight 1-0 win at home.
The Scarlet Raiders look to bounce back on Tuesday when they travel to face non-conference foe NYU at 7 p.m.
