Men's Soccer Blanks No. 22 Ramapo in Road NJAC Contest, 2-0

MAHWAH, N.J. (September 26, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team went on the road this afternoon and defeated 22nd-ranked Ramapo College in New Jersey Athletic Conference action, 2-0. The Scarlet Raiders extend their winning streak to four matches and improve to 7-3-1 (2-0-0 NJAC) while the Roadrunners see their eight-game streak snapped as they move to 8-1-0 (2-1-0 NJAC).

Rookie keeper Christian Andrach had a monster contest, facing 32 shots and racking up 14 saves en route to the victory and his sixth shutout of the season. Andrach's effort was supported by sophomore Joshua Breton-Jones who scored the game-winner in the 50th minute on his fourth goal of the year and classmate Adonis Scotland who put the match away for the visitors with his third of the campaign in the 71st.

"It was a big three points on the road today against a strong Ramapo side. Our boys defended well and saw out the result." said Head Coach Kevin East, "Moving forward we want to do a better job with our possession and decision-making on the ball, but I think we did well with the chances we did create so that was positive."

The Raiders return to action on Saturday when they host Montclair State in another huge NJAC matchup at 7:30 p.m.

After a scoreless first half that was largely controlled by Ramapo, Rutgers-Newark found a way to grab the lead just over four minutes into the second stanza.

The sequence began when the Roadrunners were awarded a free kick on the left side, five yards back from the box. An in-swinging ball near the 6 found the head of a streaking Brady White but his glancing header was gobbled up by Andrach.

The Scarlet Raiders scored on the counter following Andrach's save. The goalie rolled the ball out to a defender who blasted a long, direct ball over the top. The pass was mishandled by a Ramapo centerback, allowing Breton-Jones to break in on goal. The midfielder did not squander the chance, delivering a hard, low shot from the top of the 18 that beat the diving keeper and found the bottom-left corner of the net to make it 1-0 at 49:04.

The Roadrunners nearly equalized in the 57th minute when Ariton Mimini won the ball just inside the box and hit a bending shot that clipped the crossbar. The home team would continue to press for a tying score with three attempts in less than a minute but Joseph Fala's shot was blocked, Andrach made a save on Mimini, and Petrozziello saw his strike go high.

In the end, it was R-N that found a way to gain some breathing room in the 71st minute. Scotland applied pressure on Ramapo's back line and forced a giveaway. Scotland took full advantage of the mistake, sprinting in on net from the left side before sending a left-footed bullet into the bottom-right corner of the goal to make it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.

The Roadrunners almost halved the deficit in the 73rd when a 50-50 ball inside the box was headed powerfully by Trevor Albrecht. However, Andrach came up huge once again, rising up and just barely getting a hand on the ball to tip it over the crossbar.

With three minutes remaining, Andrach made yet another big stop, denying Justin Charkowski who was played into the box and beat his defender with some nifty footwork but could not put his left-footed shot past the netminder.

In the first half, the Raiders withstood an early onslaught from the home side before growing into the match. Ramapo's first shot came a little under two and a half minutes in from just outside the 18 but was handled easily by Andrach who had a very busy afternoon.

At the 6:37 mark, Ramapo thought it had the lead when an attacker blasted home a shot that was redirected by Andrach but he was called offside to keep the game scoreless.

The Roadrunners had another strong chance in the 19th off a corner when the first ball in came back to the wing where the midfielder beat two defenders in the box before cutting it back for Edward Franzoni who hit his shot just high.

Starting about 19 minutes in, Newark began to gain its footing.

The Raiders best chance came in the 20th minute after Scotland won a free kick on the edge of the 18. The initial attempt and a follow up were both blocked before freshman Anthony Oliveira was deemed offside when he deposited the loose ball past the keeper.

The Roadrunners had another golden opportunity with 2:30 remaining in the half when a deflected shot fell to Nick Petrozziello inside the box but his right-footed strike sailed high.

When it was all tallied up, Ramapo outshot Rutgers-Newark 32-7 (14-3 in attempts on target) and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Goalie Joshua Schaffer suffered the loss while making one stop.
