Men’s Soccer Ready for Key NJAC Matchup vs Montclair State

NEWARK, N.J. (September 28, 2018) – The red-hot Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team will welcome an equally red-hot Montclair State University side to Newark Saturday night for a key New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) showdown on Frederick Douglass Field.

Rutgers-Newark brings a record of 7-3-1 (2-1-0 NJAC) into Saturday's 7:30 p.m. match, going 6-1-1 after an 0-2-0 start to the 2018 season. During the recent stretch, Newark has recorded seven shutouts and the Scarlet Raiders most recently blanked 22nd-ranked and previously unbeaten Ramapo College on the road.
 
Montclair is 9-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference, winning six-straight matches after suffering a 5-1 loss to No. 1 Messiah College on September 8. The Red Hawks have allowed just two goals against in their last six games and dispatched of NJAC foe William Paterson University on the road Wednesday night.
 
In the 2017 regular season, Rutgers-Newark topped Montclair at Montclair by a score of 2-0, and the Scarlet Raiders defeated the Red Hawks 2-1 to punch their ticket to the NJAC Championship final back on November 1 in Newark.
 
In 2016, Newark edged MSU in the regular season, but the Red Hawks earned a win in the conference semifinals.
 
Rutgers-Newark currently leads the NJAC in shutout percentage and is second in the league in assists per game, save percentage, saves per game, total assists, total goals and total points. R-N's 26 assists and 34 goals crack the top-10 nationally (No. 9), while the team is 10th in the nation in points (94) and 26th in shutout percentage (.636) and points per game (8.55).
 
Freshman goalkeeper Christian Andrach currently sits fifth nationally with six shutouts and 945-plus minutes played, and freshman Franco Catania is in the top-20 nationally in total goals (15th) and total points (17th).
 
Montclair State paces the conference in assists per game, corners per game, points per game, scoring offense, shutout percentage, total goals and total points and will certainly provide a tough test for the Scarlet Raiders. Nixon Solgo leads MSU with six goals and three game-winning scores, while goalkeeper Mike Saalfrank has an .825 save percentage and four shutouts.
 
Admission to Saturday night's match is FREE for anyone with a valid Rutgers-Newark ID, and fans are urged to arrive early as seating will be limited.
