NEWARK, N.J. (September 5, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team rebounded from a tough opening weekend in Texas to dominate visiting CCNY during the opening match of R-N's annual Soccer Fest at the newly minted Frederick Douglass Field, 14-0. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 1-2 while the Beavers fall to 0-2.
Rutgers-Newark scored early and often as it almost exclusively kept the ball in its opponents' half of the field. Three different Raiders netted hat-tricks and eight different players found the goal. Sophomore
Joshua Breton-Jones and freshman
Franco Catania each had three goals and an assist while sophomore
Alec Viruet netted three scores as a reserve.

R-N made it three when Scotland played a through ball down the left wing. Rookie
Franco Catania chased down the ball, cut back across his defender, and finished with a shot to the far post.
CCNY's best chance came in the 25
th minute when xx curled a free kick from a few yards outside the 18 over the wall but the shot did not dip enough as it caromed off the crossbar.
The Scarlet Raiders really poured it on in the second half, starting with Catania who received a cross from freshman
Anthony Oliveira in the middle of the box, settled the ball, and drilled it past the keeper into the roof of the net.
Junior captain
Bryan Rodrigues was next, curling a free kick over wall and into left-side of net less than five minutes into the stanza.
Rookie
Pape Taha orchestrated the next tally, making a run down the right wing, beating his defender, and cutting the ball back across six for Viruet who ran in from the left wing to sneak his shot past the goalie.
In the 58
th minute, Muniz earned a penalty kick and rookie
George Angelides scored his first career goal by converting from the spot.
It was then Angelides' turn to play distributor as he sent a ball to Viruet on the left wing who one-timed a left-footed shot over the keeper from about 30 yards out.
In the 63
rd, rookie
Davi Alves slid a pass across the 18 for Catania who blasted a rising shot that beat the goalie to complete his hat-trick.
The next score came after a quick throw-in by Catania who sent rookie
Ahmed Moawad down the left wing. Moawad cut back towards the middle of the field and ripped a right-footed attempt past the keeper to open his collegiate account.
Viruet completed his hat-trick in the 70
th when freshman
Brandon Parada played him into a one-on-one with the goalie. Viruet converted, sending his shot past the on-rushing keeper.
Breton-Jones netted all three of his tallies in the final 20 minutes of the match. First he finished off a square pass from Moawad inside the 18. Then he collected the ball just outside the box and hit a right-footed effort that took a slight deflection but found its way into the goal. Finally, he broke away in the 90
th minute and beat the netminder to secure his hat-trick.
