JERSEY CITY, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders women's volleyball team traveled across the bridge tonight to partake in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match against The Gothic Knights. Rutgers University-Newark (14-8, 3-3) swept their bridge rivals, New Jersey City University (6-12, 0-6), 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-19).
Comfort Akinbo and
Jessica Moy paced the Scarlet Raiders with 13 and 8 kills, respectively. Akinbo hit a season-high .520 which is the third-highest mark of her career.
Analis Capobianco remained efficient from the serving position as she tallied four service aces in tonight's match.
Karly Gregoire had a match-high 28 assists to go along with seven digs.
The Scarlet Raiders trailed 9-6 early in the first set before stringing together four straight points to take a 10-9 lead. The Gothic Knights tied it at 10, however, the Scarlet Raiders used four Capobianco service aces to go on a 7-0 run to stretch their lead out to 17-10. NJCU tried to get back into the set, but Akinbo made sure they were unable to close the gap as she kept her squad ahead.
NJCU came out strong in the second set and registered five straight points. Rutgers University-Newark settled into the set and knotted the set up at seven with a kill by
Meredith Moore. The set would once again be leveled at 14 before Akinbo, Moy, and
Dahlia Shoukry each registered a kill aided by an attacking error to put the Scarlet Raiders up four down the stretch. NJCU rallied to tie it but the Scarlet Raiders would shut the door with a run at the end to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Scarlet Raiders took the lead before NJCU stormed back to take an 8-6 lead. Moy brought the Scarlet Raiders even before the Scarlet Raiders took the lead for good as they marched on to the win.
