GLASSBORO, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders men's soccer team led early 2-0 over the Profs but were unable to hold onto that lead as the Profs stormed back with three unanswered goals to take a crucial three New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) points. Rutgers University-Newark (5-9-1, 1-4-1) dropped the NJAC contest, 3-2, to Rowan University (8-3-3, 4-2-1).
Franco Catania was welcomed back to the squad after being sidelined with an injury and made an instant impact in tonight's NJAC game. Catania opened his scoring account tonight in the 13th minute on a pass from
Miguel Sencion. Sencion sent in the pass which found Catania inside the six where he redirected it into the back of the net to give his team an early 1-0 lead.
Catania would strike again just eight minutes later to secure the brace. Once again it was Sencion setting Catania up for the goal. This time Sencion hit a short pass to Catania who beat James Weinberg to give the Scarlet Raiders a 2-0 lead.
Rowan would cut the lead down to one 10 seconds later as Jay Vandermark fired a shot from 25 yards out which beat
Andres Medina.
The Scarlet Raiders went into the half with a 2-1 lead, however, the Profs would score two goals in the second half to win the game.
After Matt Hendrickson capitalized on a loose ball inside the box to tie it up at two, Vandermark struck again at the 87-minute mark. With extra time looming Vandermark rose above the defenders and headed the ball into the right side of the goal for what would be the eventual game-winner.
As a team, the Scarlet Raiders took 14(8) shots to 16(7) for the Profs while they edged out Rowan, 5-4, on corner kicks.
Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is another NJAC game against William Paterson University on Wednesday, October 23 at 7:30 pm at Frederick Douglass Field.
