NEWARK, N.J. | For the first time in program history, the Scarlet Raiders women's soccer program took down the Profs. Ine Collins' 78th-minute header proved to be enough as she lifted Rutgers University-Newark (9-6-1, 1-3-1) over Rowan University (6-6-1, 3-3-1), 1-0.
In a very defensive contest, the Scarlet Raiders tallied 6(3) shots while Rowan registered 13(6).
Heidi Paulson made six saves in the shutout win while Rutgers University-Newark edged out Rowan University 1-0 in corners.Â
The defensive unit of
Maria Miranda,
Sarah Suero, Ine Collins, and
Deirdre Mackin was sublime tonight. Shutting down passing lanes and winning 50/50 tackles in their final third to keep any threatening chances away from Paulson. Suero played in just her fourth game of the season and registered her first start tonight and looked like a regular starter. The defensive unit didn't miss a beat as Suero made life difficult for Rowan's forwards.Â
Ana Silveira and
Jessica Moreno paired up in the midfield and dazzled Rowan's midfielders with their skill on the ball as they wiggled their way around the defenders.Â
Sabria Glasgow nearly put the Scarlet Raiders ahead in the first half but saw her shot blocked by Bristol Pizzuto at the near post.
In the second half as the game wore on, the Scarlet Raiders seemed to get stronger. A free-kick from the right side of the field for the Scarlet Raiders would set up the game-winning goal.
Jessica Moreno sent the free-kick into the mix and confusion by the defense of allowed Collins to head the ball into the open net.
From there, the Scarlet Raiders played the possession game to whittle down the remaining time to pick up their first NJAC win of the season.
With the win, the Scarlet Raiders significantly improved their chances at making the NJAC Playoffs.
Up next, the Scarlet Raiders travel to Ramapo College on Monday, October 21 for a 3:00 pm game.
