NEWARK, N.J. | On a perfect night for soccer under the lights at Frederick Douglass Field, the women's soccer team honored their six seniors,
Carolina Gonzalez,
Shayna Bohus,
Samantha Richter,
Heidi Paulson, Ine Collins and,
Deirdre Mackin, before the game. The Scarlet Raiders registered a pair of goals by
Hope Davis and
Sabria Glasgow to overtake Kean University, 2-1 in extra time. For the second time this season the Scarlet Raiders women's soccer team did something they had never done before. Tonight's win was the first win over Kean University in program history.
Rutgers University-Newark (10-7-2, 2-3-1) took 10 shots and put half of them on target while Kean University (8-8-1, 3-4-1) took 11 and put four on goal. The Cougars edged the Scarlet Raiders 4-3 in corner kicks with Rutgers University-Newark registered 19 fouls to 13 for Kean.
Tonight's game was played between the boxes and both teams were unable to find that final ball to put on goal.
Ana Silveira,
Hope Davis, and
Jessica Moreno did a good job in the center of the pitch to control the tempo of the game which allowed the Scarlet Raiders to out-possess the Cougars.
Heidi Paulson and Marissa Cook both made three saves on the evening with five of the six saves coming in the first stanza.
At the 81:47 minute mark, Bohus found space along the right flank and drove a pass into the box when Glasgow was shielding her defender from the ball. Glasgow flicked the pass to
Hope Davis who was waiting at the top of the 18 where she blasted the ball into the top left corner for her first collegiate goal.
The Scarlet Raiders played the possession game, trying to waste time and end the game in regulation. The Cougars, on the other hand, had other plans as Lauren Jurcsek flew down the left side of the field as the clock hit one minute remaining and sent in a pass that found Lexy Monroy open at the penalty spot. Monroy redirected ball back to the direction it came from and found the bottom left side of the net to tie the game up at one with under a minute remaining.
On senior night, the Scarlet Raiders refused to be beaten on their home field where they had played so well all season. Just two minutes into extra time, the Scarlet Raiders were awarded a corner kick which led to the game-winning goal. Moreno lofted a cross into the box which found its way through the keeper's hands and bounced off of the head of Glasgow and tricked into the net for the game-winning goal.
The Scarlet Raiders will play their final game of the regular season on Wednesday, October 30 when they travel to Jersey City, NJ to take on New Jersey City University at 3:00 pm.
