JERSEY CITY, N.J. | On a muddy wet field, the Scarlet Raiders took on the Gothic Knights in their final regular-season contest. Rutgers University-Newark (11-7-2, 3-4-2) closed out their regular season with a dominant 6-0 win over New Jersey City University (7-10-1, 0-8-1). The Scarlet Raiders finished their season with 11 points in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) and will wait for the results of the William Paterson vs Ramapo and Kean vs Montclair results to see if they can punch their ticket to the NJAC Championship Tournament.
The Scarlet Raiders benefitted from an own goal 16 minutes into the first half against New Jersey City University this afternoon.
Iasia Goeloe found room along the right flank and sent in a hard cross that bounced off of Gothic Knight defender and into her own goal.
Rutgers University-Newark kept the pressure on and found their second tally of the game in the 29th minute.
Ana Silveira played the ball to
Breanna Costa just outside the 18-yard box when she struck the ball into the top left corner to open her scoring account for the season.
Just three minutes later the Scarlet Raiders were awarded a penalty kick after
Tamia Howell was taken just inside the box. Ine Collins stepped over the ball and hit her attempt low and to the right. Cidney Lee-Sam picked the correct side and parried Collins' shot away from harm. The Scarlet Raiders were nearly able to push their lead out to three when they played the ball into the box but had their shot blocked.
Aracelli Carranza of New Jersey City University was issued a red card at the 41:04 mark which set up a
Jessica Moreno free-kick. Moreno put the ball into the mixer where
Hope Davis knocked it into the back of the net for the third goal of the game.
In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders found their fourth tally.
Shayna Bohus slotted a pass to Howell, who was sitting unmarked outside the six, where she pushed it into the open net.
Deirdre Mackin was the beneficiary of a penalty kick goal just three minutes later.
Samantha Richter put her name on the stat sheet in the 78th minute when she scurried past a trio of Gothic Knights defenders and lofted her shot over the outstretched arms of Lee-Sam and into the bottom right corner.
The women dominated possession for the remainder of the game and cruised to the win.
Up next for the Scarlet Raiders will either be a game in the NJAC Championship Tournament or the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
