Kevin Ocampo netted his first goal of the season as the Scarlet Raiders squeaked by New Jersey Athletic Conference rivals, NJCU, 1-0. Rutgers University-Newark's season comes to a close after finishing in seventh in the New Jersey Athletic Conference with 11 points.
Rutgers University-Newark (7-9-2, 3-4-2) registered 21(9) shots under the misty sky at Frederick Douglass Field while holding New Jersey City University (11-9, 0-9) to 5(1). The Scarlet Raiders tallied 12 corners tonight and were called for just 11 fouls compared to two corners and 27 fouls for the Gothic Knights.
The Gothic Knights opened the game as the aggressors and put the Scarlet Raiders on their heels. The Scarlet Raiders would settle in and take control of the game. The men peppered Aldahir Cazun with six shots in four minutes, forcing him to make a trio of saves.
In the second half, the teams would stay level until Ocampo gave the Scarlet Raiders the lead. A free-kick from the left side of the field bounced around in the box and found the foot of
Joe Alba. Alba tapped it to Ocampo who found an opening to put the ball in the back of the net.
Just five minutes later, the Scarlet Raiders were awarded a penalty kick after
Juwan Ash was fouled inside the box. Senior
Jose Monzon, entered the game and went to the penalty spot for his attempt. Monzon laced his shot to the low right corner where Cazun got his hands on it to push it away from danger.
With just seconds remaining on the clock, the Gothic Knights earned a corner kick which nearly leveled the contest, however, the shot was blocked then cleared out of the box to secure the win.
The Scarlet Raiders season ends tonight and they will regroup and prepare for next season.
