NEWARK, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders women's soccer team suffered their first home loss since early September this evening when Montclair State University surged to a 3-0 win behind a Tori Rolls Hattrick.
Rutgers University-Newark (6-5-1, 0-2-1) dropped their second New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game of the season but it wasn't for a lack of offense. The Scarlet Raiders hit the woodwork once and put five of their 10 shots on target in the loss. Montclair (7-3-2, 3-0-1) remains unbeaten in the NJAC and also put 50% of their shots on target.
The Scarlet Raiders nearly took the lead just seven minutes into the contest.
Ava Dul sprinted down the sideline and sent in a low driven cross that found the foot of
Breanna Costa. Costa redirected the ball towards goal, however, it would inch wide of goal.
From there the Red Hawks went into attack mode and rifled a trio of shots at goal.
Heidi Paulson was called upon to make a save to keep the visitors off of the scoreboard. The Red Hawks broke the game open in the 29th minute when she found space down the right flank and found an opening to put the ball. Rolls laced her shot from just inside the penalty area which hit the far netting for the game's first goal.
In the second half, Rolls would strike two more times, first in the 58th minute when she lofted a shot into the back of the net. Rolls complete the hattrick, this time she had help as Cangro sent her free-kick into the box where Rolls was able to place it into the back of the net.
Deirdre Mackin had an opportunity late in the game but hit it off of the post which was eventually cleared away from danger.
The Scarlet Raiders will return to action on Monday, September 7 when they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on Brooklyn College at 6:00 pm.
