Dorian Capurso scored 9 of the 11 points in overtime to lift the Scarlet Raiders past Arcadia, 68-63, at the Golden Dome for the Tip-Off Tournament. The Scarlet Raiders will take on Wesleyan University in the second game tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm after Wesleyan defeated FDU-Florham, 65-53.
Capurso Scored a game-high 21 points for Rutgers University-Newark (1-1) on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor while also leading in rebounds (7), and assists (5).
Louise Ann Borja secured 18 points on 50% shooting while adding two steals.
Hannah Ashby and
Comfort Akinbo combined for 19 points and 9 rebounds in the win.
Arcadia University (0-2) was led by Taylor Dunn with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field. Taylor Fritz cleaned the boards to the tune of eight rebounds while dishing out four assists.
The women trailed by as much as eight in the first half but behind a rounded effort by the squad they were able to cut the lead down to three to head into the locker room.Â
Elisha India Cross gave the Scarlet Raiders a seven point lead with 1:23 remaining the third quarter when she found the bottom of the net for three off of a pass from
Samiyah Horton.Â
Arcadia gained momentum in the final stanza and eventually took the lead with 4:42 to go in the contest. Akinbo tied the game up at 55 with 2:04 to go before Taylor Dunn cashed in on a jumped to regain the lead for the Knights. With a minute to go, Capurso euro stepped her way to the basket to knot the game up at 57.Â
Both teams had several opportunites down the stretch to get the win but neither team was able to take control. It looked like the Scarlet Raiders were going to run out of time with four seconds left in the game when Taylor Fritz went to the charity stripe to shoot a pair. Fritz saw both of her attempts bounce off of the rim to send the game into overtime.
With the game in overtime, Capurso took over and willed her team to the win to even out their record at .500.Â
The Scarlet Raiders will prepare to take on Wesleyan University at 3:00 pm tomorrow at the Golden Dome for the second day of the Tip-Off Tournament.Â
