Louise Ann Borja led all scorers with 19 points, however, the Scarlet Raiders fell 66-59 to the Cougars in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play on Wednesday night at the Hardwood Arena.
Rutgers University-Newark (1-5, 0-2) suffered their fourth straight loss this evening despite outshooting the Cougars 38% to 37%. Borja shot 7-for-11 from the field and added a team-high three assists and two blocks.
Hannah Ashby finished second on the team with 10 points while
Samiyah Horton collected eight points and seven rebounds.
Kean University (4-1, 2-0) remained unblemished in the NJAC with the win and was led by Payce Lange's 17-point night. Casey Filiault nearly tallied a double-double with 9 points and 13 rebounds. Â Shannon McCoy scored 15 points and added six rebounds in the win.
After one-quarter of play, the Scarlet Raiders led 19-10 after closing out the opening stanza with an 8-0 run.
Jasmin Erichsen bumped the Scarlet Raiders up to an 11-point lead after converting a jumper from inside the paint in the second quarter.
Ashby and the Scarlet Raiders kept their hot streak going as the game wore on and they continued to increase their lead which maxed out at 15 with five seconds remaining before halftime.Â
The third quarter changed the game after Kean came out of the half and went on a 17-4 run to take the lead with 5:10 left in the third.
Comfort Akinbo leveled the game with a layup before Ashby retook the lead with a jumper which was assisted by
Elisha India Cross.
Headed into the final quarter, the Scarlet Raiders held a slim one-point, 50-49, lead. The Scarlet Raiders would hit a cold spell that would doom them for the remainder of the game as they were unable to convert a basket until there was just 3:48 left in the game.
Kean used a 12-0 run to take the lead and surge their way back to secure the NJAC win.Â
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday when they return to the Golden Dome on Saturday where they play host to The College of New Jersey at 6:00 pm.Â
