Hannah Ashby and
Syncere Lambert combined for 22 points as the Scarlet Raiders dropped their fifth straight, 58-41, to the Lions tonight at the Golden Dome in New Jersey Athletic Conference play.
Rutgers University-Newark (1-6, 0-3) shot 25.8% from the floor and 15% from three-point range and was outrebounded 51-34 on the night.
Samiyah Horton led the way with seven rebounds while adding four points and an assist.
Elisha India Cross added 10 points and four rebounds while both
Louise Ann Borja and
Comfort Akinbo tallied a block.
The College of New Jersey (5-3, 2-1) received a potent 22 point, 15 rebound double-double from Shannon Devitt while Jen Byrne added 16. Sydney Blum and Elle Cimilluca each collected three assists while Devitt secured three blocks in the contest.
The Lions led wire to wire and started the game on a 7-0 run that would set the tone for the remainder of the game. The height mismatch allowed the Lions to convert easy layups.
In the second quarter, the Lions and Scarlet Raiders each scored 11 points. Lambert had the highlight of the first half, draining a buzzer-beating half-court shot to send her team into the locker room at the half with some momentum.Â
The College of New Jersey came out strong in the third quarter and outscored the Scarlet Raiders 17-4. The Scarlet Raiders snapped their seven-minute scoreless spell when Ashby converted a pair from the charity stripe.
Rutgers University-Newark had their highest point output in the final stanza, outscoring the Lions, 15-7. The Scarlet Raiders held the Lions scoreless for nearly four minutes which helped the women cut the lead down. The late surge for the Scarlet Raiders was too late as they ran out of time.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, December 11 when they travel to Wayne, NJ to take on William Paterson at 6:00 pm.Â
