Heartbreak At The Golden Dome As MBB Falls To TCNJ In Double OT, 75-69

NEWARK, N.J. | Quincy Rutherford knocked down three straight free-throws to send the game into overtime, however, the Lions would outlast the Scarlet Raiders in double overtime, 75-69.

Rutgers University-Newark (5-3, 2-1) was led by Chase Barneys on the offensive end with 20 points while Rutherford added 18 before fouling out of the game. Barneys also led the charge with eight rebounds while Rutherford dished out a team-high three assists. Mike Vick tallied 10 points on 2-for-5 shooting from the floor and picked up three steals.

The College of New Jersey (4-3, 2-1) got 14 points from Mike Walley and Travis Jocelyn while Randall Walko and Ryan Jensen added 12 and 11, respectively. Walko picked up a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The lead flip-flopped back-and-forth in the first half until Jason Larranaga hit a three-point shot to give the Lions a one-point lead. The Lions would stretch their lead out to as much as seven before the Scarlet Raiders fought their way back into the game. Down three, BJ Honis hit a jumper from inside the paint to cut the lead down to one. TCNJ would answer with a three before Barneys hurried down the floor and cashed in on a three of his own to send the Scarlet Raiders into the half down one.

In the second half, the Lions pushed their lead out to double digits (10) with 12:25 left in the game. The Scarlet Raiders, however, never wavered. They slowly chipped away at the deficit until they were down just three after Rutherford hit a shot from behind the arc.

The Lions would surge once again and gain an eight-point lead with 2:02 left on the clock. The Scarlet Raiders dug their heels in and held the visitors scoreless for the final two minutes and cut the lead down to three with one second left on the clock.

With one tick remaining on the scoreboard, Rutherford pulled up from three and was fouled and sent to the free-throw line. There he would hit the first two before TCNJ called a timeout to try and freeze Rutherford. Out of the timeout, Rutherford looked determined and went through his routine at the charity stripe where he sank his attempt to send the game into overtime.

TCNJ quickly jumped out to a four-point lead which required the Scarlet Raiders to reground and attack the gaps in the Lions' defense. Barneys was able to do just that on a fast break to bring the game within two.

Once again the Scarlet Raiders found themselves down points with just a few seconds left on the clock. Jamir Patterson was the hero that sent the game into double overtime as he laid his attempt off of the glass to knot the game up at 65.

In the second overtime, the Lions won the battle at the free-throw line as the Scarlet Raiders were unable to hold onto their one-point lead.

Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is another NJAC game, this time they head on the road to Wayne, NJ to take on William Paterson on Wednesday, December 11 at 8:00 pm.
