Men's Basketball Falls to Stockton in Season Finale

NEWARK, N.J. (February 13, 2019) – On Senior Night the Rutgers University-Newark suffered a tough New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) loss to visiting Stockton University in The Golden Dome, 57-51. The Scarlet Raiders finish their regular season at 13-12 (6-12 NJAC) while the Ospreys conclude their 2018-19 campaign at 10-15 (8-10 NJAC).

Before the game, Rutgers-Newark honored its two seniors Mark Isiofia-Thomas and Tyler Ofray for their contributions to the program during the course of their careers. Both players eclipsed the 1,000-point mark and had a tremendous impact on and off the court for the Raiders.

R-N was led by junior Chase Barneys and Isiofia-Thomas who each scored 15 points. Isiofia-Thomas shared team-best honors with three assists while sophomore Mike Vick added nine points, a squad-high 11 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals. Ofray contributed seven points and two assists.

There were five early lead changes and four ties in the first half as the league foes battled back-and-forth. The last deadlock of the period came at 10:30 when a lay-up by sophomore Quincy Rutherford knotted the contest at 15-15.

Unfortunately, the Ospreys would go on a 10-2 surge from there to claim a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the half.

Stockton built an advantage as large as 10 points, but a pair of Vick freebies cut the deficit to 32-24 at the break.

In the second half, the visitors led by as many as 11 points when they claimed a 40-29 edge with 16:03 on the clock.

Still, R-N would fight back, embarking on an extended 20-5 run that would turn a double-digit deficit into a 49-45 lead with 4:18 remaining. Barneys had seven points during that stretch and Isiofia-Thomas added six tallies as both veterans came up with big plays, along with Vick, to drag the hosts back into the game. Isiofia-Thomas began the rally with a freebie while a Vick fast break lay-in bookended the long surge back.

However, that fight would end up with a victorious Stockton squad as the Ospreys ended the contest on a 12-2 run that would put the game away. In the end, clutch free throw shooting and a huge Keenan Williams Jr. trey swung the momentum in favor of the visitors as Stockton pulled out a 57-51 victory.
