NEWARK, N.J. (February 19, 2019) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team swept visiting Neumann University in Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) action in The Golden Dome tonight, 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-12). The Scarlet Raiders improve to 6-3 (3-1 CVC) while the Knights fall to 0-8 (0-5 CVC).
Rutgers-Newark was led by freshman
Danny Quay who had seven kills and no errors for a fantastic .875 attacking percentage. Sophomore
David Mrowko added six winners while classmate
Kyle Loesner had five and rookie
Eric Hollenbach added five as well to go with an excellent .714 attacking percentage. Overall, 11 different players recorded at least two kills. Junior
Jake Connors had a squad-high 12 digs while sophomore
Travis Emenaker and senior
Arnan Romua orchestrated the offense with 15 and 14 assists, respectively.
The Raiders have a quick turnaround as they head to face NYU in non-conference action tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m.
There were two early ties in the first set at 1-1 and 2-2 before R-N began to pull away with seven consecutive points. Mrowko contributed three kills in that run as senior
Brendon Frank added another and Loesner chipped in with an ace.
The hosts lead would balloon to 19-7 behind winners from five different players, including three from Loesner and a pair by sophomore
Nicholas Arce-Cox.
The Knights fought back with four straight points to cut their deficit to eight before Newark ended the stanza on a 6-2 spurt.
The Scarlet Raiders continued their momentum into the second, scoring the first three points and then widening that margin to 7-2 early on. Quay contributed a kill and ace to that run.
Neumann held its ground for a bit as the visitors sliced the lead down to three at 11-8. However, R-N reeled off the next four points and closed the game on a 14-5 surge that featured eight kills by five different players and a pair of aces.
Despite an early 1-1 deadlock in the third, the hosts once again never trailed. With the score at 6-5, the Raiders pulled away with a 12-2 run that included four Quay winners.
Leading 19-9, Rutgers-Newark completed the sweep by doubling up the visitors the rest of the way 6-3, punctuated by a Hollenbach spike to win the set and the match.
The Raiders ended the third game with a fantastic .529 attacking percentage on 19 winners to just one error.
