Men's Volleyball Cruises Past Immaculata in CVC Opener

IMMACULATA, Pa. (February 5, 2019) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team cruised to its second straight victory as the squad defeated Immaculata University on the road in Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) play, 3-0 (25-16, 25-5, 25-11). The Scarlet Raiders improve to 4-2 (1-0 CVC) while the Mighty Macs fall to 0-4 (0-1 CVC).

Rutgers-Newark was led by sophomore David Mrowko with seven kills while 11 different athletes recorded at least one winner. Senior Brendon Frank, sophomore Kyle Loesner, and sophomore Travis Emenaker shared team-high honors with digs apiece. Emenaker had a squad-best 11 assists but rookie Antonio Rocchio wasn't far behind with 10 helpers.

As a team, R-N had a fantastic attacking night with 33 kills to just nine errors for a .436 attacking percentage while holding Immaculata to a -.216 attacking percentage (6 kills, 17 errors).

The Raiders stay on the road for another CVC matchup this Saturday at Juniata slated for a 4 p.m. start.

Rutgers-Newark found themselves down early in the opening set, trailing by 3-0 before evening the score at 4-4 behind a pair of kills from sophomore Nicholas Arce-Cox.

While the Mighty Macs then claimed a 6-4 edge, the visitors would take control from there. The Scarlet Raiders went on a 9-0 surge to build a 13-6 lead. Loesner and freshman Elan Dorkhman each contributed two winners during that stretch.

R-N would coast from there as the team secured a 25-16 first set win.

In the second, the Raiders jumped out to a 7-3 lead before burying the hosts with 14 consecutive points en route to a 25-5 stanza victory. Frank featured heavily with six aces and two winners.

The third and final set followed a similar script as the first two. Newark turned a slim 7-5 edge into a commanding 15-5 lead with eight straight points. Two kills by junior Jake Connors and a pair of aces from rookie Eric Hollenbach helped open up the double-digit lead.

The Raiders then coasted to the finish line, closing the set and match on a 10-6 spurt to take a 25-11 win for the stanza and a 3-0 sweep for the night.
