NEWARK, N.J. (February 6, 2019) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team suffered another tough New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) loss tonight in The Golden Dome to visiting Montclair State University, 46-37. The Scarlet Raiders move to 12-11 (9-7 NJAC) while the Red Hawks improve to 15-8 (11-5 NJAC).
Rutgers-Newark was led by senior
Faith Ashby who recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds (eight offensive) while adding a squad-high four assists. Freshman
Dorian Capurso chipped in eight points and a team-best 12 boards (six offensive). Capurso and Ashby shared team-high honors with three steals. Junior
Hannah Ashby chipped in eight points, four caroms, an assist, a block, and a steal.
The Raiders have their last league road trip of the season on Saturday when they visit Rowan for a 7 p.m. contest.
The opening quarter featured four lead changes and three ties as the momentum swung back-and-forth. All the deadlocks were very early with the last one coming at 6-6 when Capurso converted a lay-up.
MSU scored the next four points to take its largest lead of the period but R-N battled back. The hosts went on a little 5-0 run to end the first as junior
Comfort Akinbo hit a free throw, rookie
Elisha India Cross added a lay-up, and
Faith Ashby gave the Scarlet Raiders their first edge of the game after a jumper that made it 11-10.
Newark twice led by three in the second on buckets from Capurso and
Faith Ashby, however, the Red Hawks turned the contest on its head with a 7-0 surge to claim a 19-15 advantage with 1:21 remaining in the period.
Hannah Ashby cut that deficit down to one on a 3-pointer with 28 ticks on the clock before Montclair State responded with a lay-up to head into the break leading 21-18.
The Red Hawks built their edge to 30-23 with 3:11 remaining in the third and looked to pull away. Still, the Raiders rallied, Faith and
Hannah Ashby earned a pair of baskets in the paint to trim the deficit to three.
MSU ended the third with a traditional three-point play to carry a six-point edge into the fourth.
Trailing 37-29 with 8:18 to play, R-N went on one last rally. Cross drained a shot from downtown and
Faith Ashby added four points as the hosts used a 7-2 spurt to make it a 39-36 contest.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Raiders would get. The Red Hawks finished the night on a 7-1 run to take the 46-37 victory.
