Scarlet Raiders Come Up Just Short Against Worcester St., 7-5

Kissimmee, FL | Worcester St. used a trio of pitchers to defeat the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark, 7-5, in the first game of their Spring Break trip.  It was the lone game of the day for the Scarlet Raiders.

Worcester St. (6-2) had three pitchers combine for eight strikeouts as the Scarlet-Raiders (0-3) came up just short under the warm sun in Florida.

Sean Mahan went seven innings, striking out six while walking just one batter over 85 pitches. Mahan allowed three runs and seven hits over that stretch before Joey Zawisza came in for relief for 1.1 innings. Zawisza surrendered two runs on two hits which forced Aidan Abernathy to come in to secure the final out.

For the Scarlet Raiders, Luis Rojas (0-2) pitched well allowing four runs, two earned, on just five hits. Rojas sent seven batters back to the dugout via strikeouts and walked three batters. Anthony Rosoline pitched a scoreless inning with a solo strikeout. Nicholas Casaleggio went 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on three hits for Rutgers-Newark. Michael Katims picked up a strikeout and a run in 0.2 innings.

Rutgers-Newark took an early 2-0 lead after Luke Magliaro hit a two-out double to center field which scored Connor Clare and Kevin Tamsula. Magliaro would try to stretch his double into a triple but the ball beat him to the bag notching the third out.

Worcester tied it up in the top of the second, scoring two runs while scattering four hits. Chaves Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to get the Lancers on the board as it scored Leslie from third. The very next at-bat the Lancers tied it up with a Bigelow single through the left side.

Scoring would go dormant until the sixth inning where Worcester would score another pair, giving them their first lead of the game. Tamsula brought the Scarlet Raiders within one with an RBI double to right center which scored Clare.

Up just one run, the Lancers scored three runs in the top of the 9th to put the game out of reach for the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers-Newark made a strong push in their final stand but they added just two runs on a pair of RBI singles by Michael Streim and Anthony Ricardo. The Scarlet Raiders were in prime position to tie the game up as they had the bases loaded with two outs, however, Clare popped up for the final out of the game, leaving three men stranded.

The Scarlet Raiders scattered 9 hits led by Streim who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI. Tamsula went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run while Clare went 1-for-5 with a pair of runs.

Rutgers-Newark will look to pick up their first win of the season tomorrow at 2:00 pm against Ripon.
