Baseball's 3-Game Win Streak Ends At The Hands of Drew, 23-5

Madison, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders played in their first game back in New Jersey this afternoon against non-conference opponents, Drew University. Rutgers-Newark suffered their first loss in four games after falling to the Rangers, 23-5, at Doc Young Field.

Ryan Zucker had the only multi-hit day for the Scarlet Raiders going 2-for-2 with a run while Chris Suleski collected three RBI, a team-high.  John Klimowich was able to cross home plate twice while going 1-for-2 with a walk.

Rutgers-Newark (5-5) used a committee from the mound, using six hurlers in the loss.  Tyler Searles (0-2) got the start and went 2.1 innings whiles walking four batters and allowed just two hits but four earned runs.

Drew University (8-7) had a pair of batters, C. Bosch and B. Dagostino, tally four RBI in the win. Bosch and Dagostino both collected three hits with Dagostino pacing the team with four runs scored.  On the mound, B. Pascale (1-0) picked up the win after throwing 4.2 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a good starting taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Zucker found himself on first via a base on balls before stealing second to put himself in scoring position. Luke Magliaro drove Zucker home with an RBI double down the left field line to give Rutgers-Newark an early lead on the road.

Klimowich led off in the top of the second with a double down the left field line, much like L. Magliaro's the inning before. Suleski would pick up the sacrifice fly, RBI after flying out to right field which allowed L. Magliaro to score from second.

Drew used one hit in the bottom of the second to tie the game up at two.  Dagostino doubled to left center which brought home M. Lange from first to put the first run on the board for the Rangers. S. Benson followed that up with a hit to deep right field which allowed Dagostino to cross the dish and knot the game up.

The third inning wasn't kind to the Scarlet Raiders as they were held scoreless in the top before Drew powered their way to 10 runs in the bottom of the third.  The 10 runs extended their lead to 12-2 and all but put the game out of reach for Rutgers-Newark. Michael Streim belted a solo homerun in the top of the fourth to cut into the lead.

Rutgers-Newark looked to be mounting a comeback after scoring three runs between the fourth and fifth inning. Drew University's bats caught fire once more as they scored 11 more runs over the course of the fifth and sixth inning. The Scarlet Raiders didn't have an answer for the offensive onslaught from Drew University. After scoring those runs, Drew University tightened up their defense and held the Scarlet Raiders scoreless the rest of the game.

Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is an NJAC showdown with TCNJ on Saturday, March 30th in Trenton, NJ.
