Morristown, NJ I The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team got back to its winning ways after a 10-day hiatus, sweeping the College of Saint Elizabeth by scores of 25-17, 25-10, and 25-15. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 14-7 while the Eagles fall to 4-12.
Rutgers-Newark was led by an effective attack that featured 10 players with at least one kill. As a team, the visitors out-hit CSE 33 kills to 18 and racked up a .324 attacking percentage while holding the hosts to a -.099 attacking percentage. Individually,
Arvind Kumar,
Elan Dorkhman, and
Kyle Loesner each recorded six kills.
Travis Emenaker led a trio of setters with 11 assists as
Antonio Rocchio added eight and
Arnan Romua chipped in with seven.
The Raiders return to Continental Volleyball Conference and New Jersey Athletic Conference play tomorrow night when they travel to the third-best team in the nation, Kean University, for a 7:30 p.m. match.
R-N jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the first set and would not hold less than a five-point edge for the remainder of the game. A pair of Loesner spikes, one winner from Dorkhman, and one ace from Kumar contributed to that dominant opening stretch.
After allowing the Eagles to get within 17-12, a quick 3-0 spurt that featured a kill from
Brendon Frank and a block by Frank and
Danny Quay put the stanza out of reach. A winner from
Nicholas Arce-Cox followed up immediately by an Arce-Cox and Dorkhman block capped the set at 25-17 in favor of the Scarlet Raiders.
The visitors never trailed in the second game but CSE hung around in the early stages. Hanging on to a slim 8-6 lead, Newark pulled away with an impressive 8-0 surge. Quay contributed two blocks and a kill, Loesner had a winner and a block, and Romua added an ace to make it 16-6.
From there, the Raiders cruised to a 25-10 win that ended on three consecutive kills, one each from Loesner, Arce-Cox, and Dorkhman.
In the third stanza, the Eagles gained a couple of early one-point edges and were deadlocked at 6-6. Still, following a familiar pattern, Rutgers-Newark took control from that point on. This time, the visitors used a 14-4 run to open up an insurmountable 20-10 advantage. Four different Raiders recorded kills, Rocchio had a pair of aces, and Arce-Cox and Kumar contributed a block during that stretch to effectively seal the match. Kumar eventually iced the contest officially with a spike off a Rocchio assist to win the set 25-15 and clinch the sweep.
