ARLINGTON, Va. | The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team bowed out of the Continental Volleyball Championship (CVC) Tournament First Round this evening as the no. 4-seed, falling 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 25-18) to fifth-seeded Marymount University. The Scarlet Raiders are now 16-10 while the Saints improve to 14-14 and move on to the semifinals.
Rutgers-Newark was led by newly-minted CVC Rookie of the Year
Arvind Kumar who totaled 11 kills while
Danny Quay added nine. A trio of
Elan Dorkhman,
Brendon Frank, and
David Mrowko each contributed seven winners.
Jake Connors and
Travis Emenaker had eight digs apiece to lead the squad and Dorkhman chipped in with seven. Emenaker led the team with 23 assists while
Arnan Romua added 16 as the pair shared time at setter.
The Raiders fell behind early in the first set, 7-3, but rallied with three straight points to keep it close. Trailing by three, the visitors went on another 3-0 spurt, capped by a Quay spike, to even the game at 12-12. R-N was able to briefly gain a 15-14 edge and had the set all tied up at 18-18.
Unfortunately, the Saints would use a 3-0 surge of their own to take a 21-18 lead and all but seal the first. While the away side remained close, Marymount would take a 25-22 win.
The second game went the Scarlet Raiders way as they flipped a 10-7 deficit into a 14-12 advantage. Frank contributed two kills and a block, Kumar had a kill and a block, Quay added a winner, and Mrowko was a wall with a pair of denials to get the visitors in front.
After the hosts evened the score at 15-15, a 4-1 surge put Rutgers-Newark in front for good.
Kyle Loesner, Quay, and Dorkhman had winners down the stretch as Dorkhman capped the set with a spike to hand the Raiders a 25-22 victory and even the match at 1-1.
The visitors' offense was great in the second, hitting at a .440 clip with 14 kills to just three errors.
The third stanza followed a similar pattern as the Saints again jumped out to an early lead, this time 8-3. R-N rallied right back with six of the next points to knot the set at 9-9 behind kills from Loesner, Kumar, and Mrowko.
There were another three lead changes and two ties from there, but Marymount wound up taking control. Although a Dorkhman spike cut the deficit to 18-17, three straight Saints' points put the game out of reach as the hosts took the pivotal set 25-21.
The fourth stanza was tight early as winners by Quay, Frank, Kumar, and Mrowko had the game even at 6-6. Unfortunately, Marymount would pull away from there, taking the next eight points and earning a commanding 14-6 lead.
Four winners from Quay helped the Scarlet Raiders claw back within 18-14, but that was as close as they would get as the Saints took the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
