NEWARK, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders rallied back in the bottom of the eighth for a come-from-behind win over New Jersey Athletic Conference foes Montclair State University, 7-3. Rutgers University-Newark improved to 9-12 (3-5 NJAC) while Montclair dropped to 10-16 (1-7 NJAC).
Anthony Rosoline (3-2) picked up his third win of the season this afternoon after pitching eight innings. Rosoline allowed three runs on nine hits while striking out a pair.
Marcus James came in and hurled 23 pitches and allowed just one hit to close out the game.
Ryan Zucker went 2-for-5 from the dish with a run while
Dominic Magliaro finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Connor Clare was the third Scarlet Raider with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with a run.
Brian Reiss tossed 129 pitches in the loss and looked good most of the game until he allowed the Scarlet Raiders to score seven runs in a tough eighth inning. Reiss tallied three strikeouts and conceded eight hits before Justin Silva came in as relief. Andrew Ollwerther finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI which led the squad.
Montclair got the scoring going in the top of the third with a Chris Walker single to right field. The Red Hawks added another pair when Ollwerther tattooed the ball over the left field wall.
The bases would remain quiet until the Scarlet Raiders exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth. Zucker beat the throw to first with an infield single to get the first runner on base. D. Magliaro would move Zucker to third with a single to right field before stealing second base.
Luke Magliaro gave the Scarlet Raiders their first tally with a single up the middle.
John Klimowich followed that up with a single through the left side to score D. Magliaro which cut the lead down to one.
Chris Suleski reached on a fielding error by the shortstop which allowed both Klimowich and L. Magliaro to score and gave the Scarlet Raiders the lead for good. Rutgers University-Newark used six hits to score seven runs aided by one error.
Montclair would put a scare into the Scarlet Raiders by loading the bases in the top of the 9th but were unable to bring anyone home.
The Scarlet Raiders will return to action tomorrow when they will travel to
Union, NJ to continue their NJAC slate against Kean University with the doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m.
