Bronx, NY | The Scarlet Raiders belted 16 hits and scored 14 runs to knock off non-conference opponent, Lehman College, 14-7. The win ends a three-game losing skid for Rutgers-Newark while the losing streak continues for the Lightning.
Gerardo A. Reyes led the Scarlet Raiders with five RBI while going 3-for-5 from the dish. Â
Chris Suleski finished 3-for-4 with three runs and
Luke Magliaro tallied a pair of RBI on 3-of-5 hitting.
Dominic Magliaro also picked up two RBI and two runs while going 2-for-6 from the plate.
Eric Morales got the start on the mount but was unable to make it out of the first inning after allowing four runs, two earned, on just three hits.
Michael Matusz (1-0) came in and quickly shut the Lightning down. Matusz earned his first win of the season, going five innings and striking out six while allowing just two hits and one run.Â
Namir Garcia led the Lightning with three RBI and three runs while going 2-for-3. Â Following close behind was Anthony Riley with two RBI and a pair of hits.Â
Lehman College (5-15) jumped all over the Scarlet Raiders, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. Riley was the first batter to drive in a run, using a single to right field to bring home Vargas. An error in the field prolonged the inning which allowed the home squad to add to their total to give them a perfect start to a home contest.
Not to be outdone, Rutgers-Newark (6-8) came storming back in the top of the second to score a trio of runs which was also aided by an error. After
Connor Clare walked to lead off the inning,
John Klimowich reached on an error by the shortstop to put two runners on with no outs. Reyes hit a single to center field which scored both Clare and Klimowich. Reyes, however, tried to extend his single into a double and was tossed out at second base.Â
The Scarlet Raiders kept their scoring going in the top of the third where they would score one run after
Kevin Tamsula hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home D. Magliaro. Â Rutgers-Newark scored three more runs over the fifth and sixth innings before erupting for seven runs in the top of the seventh.
Reyes highlighted the seventh inning with a three-run homer to left field which scored Suleski and Klimowich after they both reached via singles.Â
Lehman tried to make a case for a comeback late in the contest but was shut down by the Scarlet Raiders' pitching staff.Â
