NEWARK, N.J. | On Friday night in front of 300 fans at the Lubektin Field on the campus of NJIT, New York University (1-0) scored once in the first and once in the second on the way to a 2-0 victory over Rutgers University-Newark (0-1).
NYU was graced with a bit of luck for their first goal of the game as a shot aimed at the center of the goal would get deflected off of a Scarlet Raider defender and roll into the near side of the goal to put the visitors up 1-0 just 11 minutes in. NYU enjoyed a 57% share of the possession in this contest spending a majority of it on Rutgers-Newark's half.
With the Scarlet Raiders losing the possession battle early in the game, Head Coach
Ariana Ruela brought in substitutes that lifted the team.
Bailey Kellenberger was electric on the flank and was able to put one of her teams four shots on target, making Meghan Marhan work.
Heidi Paulson was active in net all game and was forced to make 12 saves throughout.
The Violets would double their mark 14 minutes into the second half in the 59th minute when Julia Raith uncorked a shot from 25 yards out and found the top right corner. Paulson dove but the shot was just out of her reach.
Deirdre Mackin would attempt to cut the lead in half when she found herself open outside of the 18-yard box but saw her shot go over the bar and out for a goal kick.
NYU would maintain possession for the rest of the game to seal the clean sheet and start their season in the win column. For the Scarlet Raiders they will look to bounce back on Sunday, September 1 when they host Bryn Mawr at 3:00 pm.
