Scarlet Raiders Fall To Bryn Mawr, 1-0

NEWARK, N.J. |   A 59th minute goal by Laura Burckhardt would be enough to lift the Owls past the Scarlet Raiders this afternoon at Lubektin Field at NJIT. The Scarlet Raiders drop to 0-2 on the year while the Owls level out at 1-1.

The Scarlet Raiders enjoyed a 52-48 possession share in the first half of the game. Despite having just five shots, the Owls had two of their shots bounce off of the woodwork keeping the game knotted at 0.  Jasmin Erichsen got the start in net and was called upon once in the first half to make a save and she was able to push it wide.

Late in the first half, the Scarlet Raiders saw the ball go into the back of the net when Melanie Egas corralled a rebound and placed it into the back of the net. Unfortunately, a foul was called before the shot to take the tally off of the board. With the pressure on, Rutgers-Newark had a corner kick with 48 seconds remaining and Ana Silveira had a chance outside the box that would be blocked to send the game into the half, 0-0.

The Scarlet Raiders came out strong in the second half and had a few quality chances slide right by the post. Egas curled a shot just wide of the net. Silveira had her attempt blocked as the Owls' defense did their job to keep Rutgers-Newark off of the scoreboard. The Owls would turn their defense into offense as Grecia Prieto hit a long punt down the center of the pitch which found Laura Burckhardt wide open. Burckhardt turned around and ate up the free space before unleashing a shot into the top right corner over Jasmin Erichsen.

Down a goal the Scarlet Raiders turned up the heat and tested the backline of the Owls. Prieto and the defense were up to the task as they survived wave after wave of attacks from Rutgers-Newark. Jessica Moreno was all over the pitch this afternoon as she was winning tackles on her side of the field before threading a through ball to one of her teammates.

Moreno had two attempts on net, one of which forced Prieto to make a save and the other went just wide of goal. The Scarlet Raiders defenders joined in on the attack with just seven minutes left as Ine Collins and Deirdre Mackin both put a shot on target but were stonewalled by Prieto.

With just five ticks left on the clock the Scarlet Raiders tried to play a long ball towards goal but were unable to find an open player as time expired.

Mackin led the Scarlet Raiders with three shots, two of which were on target. Rutgers-Newark had a healthy edge in corners, 6-2, while also leading in shots, 16-10.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, September 4 when they host Lehman College at 5:00 pm at Frederick Douglass Field.
