MORRISTOWN, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders women's volleyball team picked up their third straight win tonight. Rutgers University-Newark (4-3) took down the Eagles of St. Elizabeth (2-2), 3-0.
In the opening set, the Eagles and Scarlet Raiders went back and forth, with the visitors holding a small 6-4 lead. From there, Rutgers University-Newark benefitted from four errors and a service ace from
Alexa Rivera to burst open the set with a 5-0 run.Â
The Eagles attempted to find a foothold in the set to mount a comeback, however, the Scarlet Raiders used another 5-0 run to take an 18-8 lead.
Sharon Starling and
Comfort Akinbo each added a kill during that run to help extend their lead. The women would maintain their lead as they cruised to an opening 25-15 win.
St. Elizabeth pushed the Scarlet Raiders to their limits in the second set. The set extended past 25 as Rutgers University-Newark needed 27 points to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Things looked bleak for the home squad as the Scarlet Raiders jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the set. With a four-point lead midway through the set, the Eagles used a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to one.Â
A service error handed the serve back to the Scarlet Raider but it wouldn't be for long as an attacking error sent it right back to the Eagles. With the momentum starting to swing in the direction of the home team the Scarlet Raiders used a timeout to regroup and surge forward to the end of the set. Down 24-22, Rivera cut into the lead with a kill before an attacking error by the Eagles knotted the set up at 24. Â St. Elizabeth would once again be one point away from victory, however,
Alexa Rivera had other plans as she secured three straight kills to push her team to the win.Â
The back-and-forth nature of the set followed from the second stanza as neither team could separate from the other. Up just one point,
Karly Gregoire and
Eliana Rivera helped the Scarlet Raiders take a 22-16 lead. Â Rutgers University-Newark shut the door on the Eagles as they wrapped up the third set for their fourth win of the season.Â
The women return to action on Thursday, September 12 where they will travel to Farmingdale, NY to take on Farmingdale State at 7:00 pm.
