NEWARK, N.J. | Three Scarlet Raiders tallied a goal tonight as they squeaked by Sarah Lawrence, 3-2. Rutgers University-Newark (3-3) evened out their record while Sarah Lawrence (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season.
The Scarlet Raiders came out as the aggressors in the first half, firing off three shots in the opening 12 minutes of the contest.
Sabria Glasgow, NJAC Offensive Player of the Week, put Madison Mertsch to work early, forcing her to make a save just two minutes in. Play would remain in the center of the pitch as both teams tried to pick each other apart before finding the final pass.
At 13:50 the Scarlet Raiders would crack the code to the Gryphons' defense.
Jessica Moreno crossed the ball into the middle of the box and found newly converted forward,
Tamia Howell, for the first goal of the game. Howell has provided a spark for the Scarlet Raiders up front as she has used her speed and awareness to be in the right spot at the right time.
Less than a minute later, Glasgow would cash in for the sixth time this season.
Deirdre Mackin found success down the left flank and was able to cut into the box where she played a low cross to a wide-open Glasgow just outside the six. Glasgow was able to take a touch and place it into the side net to double up their lead just 16 minutes into the game.
Sarah Lawrence wouldn't go quietly as Niki Dalrymple launched a rocket of a shot towards
Jasmin Erichsen from outside the 18-yard box to find the side net of the left side.
After three goals in a short 13-minute span, the dust would settle and both teams would return to the style of play that was seen early on.
Samantha Richter nearly gave the Scarlet Raiders a 3-1 lead just two minutes into the second stanza but saw her chance go wide. The Gryphons would regroup and charge down the field only to be fouled in the final third. Tiffany McBrayer curled the free-kick into the mix to find Haley Willibey who was able to tuck it under an outstretched
Heidi Paulson to bring the lead down to one.
After the quick flurry of goals in the first five minutes, neither team would be able to find the back of the net again. Howell would constantly test Mertsch but she was unable to double her tally despite leading the team with seven shots.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, September 14 where they will host John Jay College at 5:00 pm.
