Scarlet Raiders Cage Bloodhounds For Third Straight Win, 3-0

NEWARK, N.J. | On Saturday night under the lights at Frederick Douglass Field, a trio of goals by the Scarlet Raiders helped lead Rutgers University-Newark (4-3) past John Jay (2-3), 3-0.

On their home turf, the Scarlet Raiders were primed to keep their win streak alive against the intruding Bloodhounds. Iria Diaz put the Scarlet Raiders ahead in the eighth minute when Tamia Howell split the defenders with a pass to send Diaz through on a breakaway. Diaz was able to outpace the center backs and toe poke her shot underneath Erika Estro for the first goal of her season.

John Jay would storm down the field after the kickoff and nearly tie the game up as Katie Healy rifled her shot wide. Melanie Egas almost doubled the Scarlet Raiders' lead in the 25th minute but saw her attempt go just over the bar.

The Scarlet Raiders continued to apply pressure in the second half which caused a flurry of fouls. Iasia Goeloe, Anneliese Tucci, Ana Silveira, and Jillian Golden all received yellow cards in the game tonight.

With a majority of the game being playing in the center of the field neither team threatened in the early goings of the second half. With just ten minutes remaining in the game, Rutgers University-Newark found pay dirt once again when Samantha Richter sent a driven cross into the box which found Shayna Bohus. Bohus, who was at the right spot, finished the cross by placing the ball in the back of the net for her second goal in as many games.

Bailey Kellenberger scored what was the goal of the game. With 11 ticks remaining on the clock, she would force her way through a pair of Bloodhound defenders and rip one over Estro's head and into the top of the goal for the third and final goal of the game.

Heidi Paulson was called upon four times tonight and saved any attempt put her way.

Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is a road game against Old Westbury at 4:00 pm in Old Westbury, NY.
