SCRANTON, Pa. | Just two days removed from playing #19 Stevens Institute, the Scarlet Raiders hit the road to take on Marywood University in their final non-conference game before the start of NJAC contests. Marywood University (1-5) used a late comeback to surge past Rutgers University-Newark (3-4), 4-3.
The game was off to a physical start with
Joe Alba receiving a yellow card just seven minutes into the contest. Off of the free-kick rewarded from the foul, Giovanni Amato put his attempt off of the crossbar. Mike Ingenito followed up the rebound but hit the ball over the bar and safely out of play.
In the 28' the Pacers were able to beat
Christian Andrach for the first goal of the game. A cross from the right flank found Carlos Perez just outside the box where he unleashed a shot to hit the back net.
Shortly thereafter, Perez would be shown a yellow card for a tough foul.
After a relatively quiet first half, the second half exploded open with goals. Six of the games seven goals were scored in the second stanza.
Ten minutes into the second half
Juwan Ash played a long through ball to
Adonis Scotland who beat out two defenders for a tap-in goal to knot the game up at one. The Scarlet Raiders' leading goal scorer from a season ago,
Franco Catania, doubled up their lead with his first tally of the season.
Dino Branco served up a ball into the box which set up Catania from 14 yards out.
Rutgers University-Newark would not take their foot off of the gas as just two minutes later Catania would pick up an assist. Alba received the pass from Catania and laced one from 25 yards out which beat the keeper and gave his team a two-goal lead.
The Pacers answered with a pair of goals within two minutes. It was a penalty kick that tied the game up at three in the 74'.
With six minutes remaining in the game, the Pacers used a free-kick to set up the fourth goal to seal the game in their favor.
Scotland had a chance to tie it up with 52 seconds left but saw his shot go wide left and out of harm's way.
The Scarlet Raiders will regroup and prepare for their first NJAC game of the season on Saturday, September 21 when they host The College of New Jersey.
