Women's Volleyball Drops A Pair In Tri-Match, 3-0, 3-1

KINGS POINT, N.Y. | After winning 9 matches straight the Scarlet Raiders women's volleyball has stumbled as of late, dropping their last three matches. Today they opened up the day with a 3-0 loss to United States Merchant Marine Academy before falling 3-1 to Moravian College. The pair of losses drops Rutgers University-Newark to 10-6.

Match 1: USMMA 3, Rutgers University-Newark 0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-22)

The Scarlet Raiders opened up the day by hitting .060 as a team with their second set being the best with a .217 hitting percentage. The trio of Comfort Akinbo, Alexa Rivera and Sharon Starling all tallied 6+ kills in the match with Akinbo leading the way with a .158 hit percentage.

USMMA and the Scarlet Raiders remained close in the opening set until USMMA used a 6-0 run to jump ahead and gain a large lead, one the Scarlet Raiders were unable to recover from. As the match wore on Rutgers University-Newark improved their point total in each set but were unable to muster a similar comeback to the one where they forced a fifth set against Ramapo.

Karly Gregoire finished with a season-low 16 assists while Brione Lockett logged 17 digs.

Match 2: Moravian 3, Rutgers University-Newark 1 (11-25, 25-17, 22-25, 18-25)

Once again the Scarlet Raiders couldn't find their groove in the opening set against the Greyhounds as they fell 25-11 and hit .077 as a squad. The Scarlet Raiders did improve their team hitting from their first match of the day to .072.

Alexa Rivera led the Scarlet Raiders in the second match with 11 kills on 59 swings, while also tallying 13 digs. Gregoire passed her way to 23 assists while Saniyiah Richardson led the team with 16 digs. Julia Farkas added two blocks which sat behind just Alexa Rivera's three for the lead.

The Scarlet Raiders came back in the second set and were able to tie the match up at one after winning 25-17. With the set tied at 17 Gregoire used three service aces paired with several errors by Moravian to go on an 8-0 run to close out the second set.

Unfortunately, the ball would not fall in favor of the Scarlet Raiders for the remaining two sets as the Greyhounds were able to wrap up the match by winning the final two sets.

Next up for the Scarlet Raiders is another New Jersey Athletic Conference match against Kean University on Tuesday, October 1 at 7:00 pm at The Golden Dome.
