NEWARK, N.J. | In their home opener, the men's soccer team did not disappoint in front of a loaded crowd at Frederick Douglass Field. Rutgers University-Newark (1-2) downed City College of NY (0-2), 8-0, on a night where
Anthony Oliveira and
Juwan Ash both scored a brace.
Oliveira struck first in the 11th minute on a pass from
Joe Alba. Alba lofted a cross in from the left flank and found Oliveira towering over the defense for an easy header into the back of the net. Just five minutes later
Ryan Silva found Oliveira in the box once again, except this time it was on the ground as Oliveira was able to put one past Kacper Lesniak.
The Scarlet Raiders dominated possession for most of the first half as the Beaver defense was constantly chasing the ball. Rutgers-Newark wouldn't strike again until 15 minutes later when Ash subbed on in the 30th minute and scored in the 31st minute of the game. Ash made an angled run to the back post from the right side of the field and found himself with an easy tap in after
Ryan Caruso sent a low cross to the back post.
After having several attempts at goal, Silva finally opened his scoring account for the season with a goal in the 38th minute. Silva used his speed to burst past the backline of CCNY and beat Lesniak to put the Scarlet Raiders up 4-0 before the half.
In the second half,
Andrew Andrach sent a ball down the right side to
Ariel Parada who one-timed it into the middle of the box which found Caruso waiting to put it in the back of the net. Three minutes later Ash would cash in on a pass from A. Parada as he dazzled CCNY defenders with his skill before finding Ash.
A. Parada would finally get a goal of his own in the 71st minute when he capitalized on a penalty kick. The final goal of the game came in the 89th minute when Ahmen Moawad found himself on a breakaway against Lesniak. Moawad was able to sneak his shot through the legs of Lesniak for his first of the season.
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Saturday, September 7 where they will host the Brick City Classic over the weekend.
