WASHINGTON, DC | The women's soccer team traveled south to participate in the DC Classic at Catholic University this afternoon. The Scarlet Raiders (1-3) fell to Randolph-Macon College (4-0) 4-1.
The Yellow Jackets came out strong and tested the defense of Rutgers-Newark. A trio of shots would whizz by the goal in the first eight minutes of the game.
Melanie Egas recorded the first shot on goal of the game when she uncorked a shot that was stopped by netminder, Christina Newman.
Heidi Paulson would be called to duty twice during a five-minute span as Casey Kent and Meghan Skevington forced Paulson to make a save. The Yellow Jackets seemed to be heading into the half with a draw, however, with five seconds remaining Tyria Smalls found the back of the net to change half time talks for both teams.
The momentum from the first half carried over to the second half for Randolf-Macon as they scored within the first five minutes to double their goal total. Before the Scarlet Raiders could make the proper adjustments, Gabby Nelson secured her brace just two minutes later to increase their lead to 3-0. Tyria Smalls scored the fourth and final goal for her team in the 69th minute.
Deirdre Mackin had two of the five shots for her team this afternoon and she was able to put one in the back of the net. Mackin stepped to the penalty kick spot and powered it past Christina Newman to prevent the shutout. Mackin would later attempt to double her tally put hit her shot high and over the bar.
The women return to action tomorrow for day two of the DC Classic where they will take on Penn State-Harrisburg at 12:00 pm.
