NEWARK, N.J. |
Dino Branco netted the first goal of his career as Rutgers University-Newark (3-2) defeated New York University (0-4), 1-0, in the 13th annual Brick City Classic.
The Violets came out strong against the Scarlet Raiders and nearly went up 1-0, however, Santiago Huertas' attempt from inside the 18 went wide right. Branco put a shot on net in the 21st minute which forced Luca Mancuso to come up with a save.
Branco would beat Mancuso early in the second half. Branco's first shot attempt would be blocked by a defender but he was able to gather the rebound and rifle one into the back of the net.
NYU would answer with three straight shots, however,
Andres Medina was able to come up with save after save to prevent the shutout.
Anthony Oliveira nearly doubled the Scarlet Raiders' total but was stonewalled by Mancuso in the six-yard box.
Rutgers University-Newark would lock down the defense and prevent the Violets from finding open space to find the back of the net.
The win this afternoon marks the third straight for the Scarlet Raiders and they will hope to carry that momentum over to Saturday, September 14 when they host Stevens at 7:30 pm.
