CAMDEN, NJ | For the second game in a row, the Rutgers University-Newark men's basketball team held their opponent to under 40 points in a game. This afternoon the Scarlet Raiders took on the Scarlet Raptors in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play and won 59-38.
Rutgers University-Newark (10-4, 6-1) won their second straight and once again their nationally-ranked defense was on display. The Scarlet Raiders are allowing just 58.8 points per game this season, good for the fifth-best in the country for Division III.
Chase Barneys led the way with 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting while
Jamir Patterson added 10 for his second double-digit outing of the season.
David Logan tallied five points and led the team with four assists.
Rutgers University-Camden (4-9, 1-6) was led by Arian Azemi who scored 17 points, the lone Scarlet Raptor to record double-digit points. Isaac Destin led the team with eight rebounds and added five points.Â
The Scarlet Raiders found themselves down 6-3 in the early goings of the first half, however,
Dante Ralph cut that down to one with a layup before Patterson cashed in from range to give his team the lead.  Â
Jordan Salisbury and Barneys followed up with a three-point basket of their own to bump their lead out to seven with 11:33 to go in the opening half.Â
With just 2:34 remaining in the first half, the Scarlet Raiders held a four-point lead but they went on a 10-0 run to end the half to send them into the half with the momentum and a 14-point lead.
Quincy Rutherford gave the Scarlet Raiders their first 20-point lead of the game in the second half when he converted a jumper and then followed it up with a pair of free throws just moments later.Â
The Scarlet Raiders were in the driver's seat in the second half and with 4:09 left, Salisbury connected on a long-range bucket to briefly give his squad a 31-point lead. The Scarlet Raptors were unable to muster up a comeback as the Scarlet Raiders would go on to win.
